The Panthers' major decision regarding their coaching staff following the tough loss to the Packers
Panthers turn to experienced NFL coach Todd Wash following defensive struggles

The Carolina Panthers have made significant changes to their coaching staff following Thursday night's disappointing 27-19 defeat against the Green Bay Packers.
Head coach Dave Canales has decided to take a different approach defensively, dismissing defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley on Friday.
The decision comes as Carolina attempts to turn its season around after falling to a 3-4 record. The team's defensive performances have become a major concern, particularly against the run, where the Panthers have struggled to prevent opponents from gaining significant yardage.
Carolina entered the week ranked 22nd in total defense and last in the NFL against the run. Their latest defeat against Green Bay only increased the pressure on the coaching staff.
Packers quarterback Jordan Love completed 30 of 41 passing attempts for 288 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
Injuries have also played a role in Carolina's defensive struggles. Starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson have missed recent games, while backup cornerback Akayleb Evans was placed on injured reserve earlier this week.
Their absences have left the Panthers with fewer options in the secondary.
Dave Canales explains his decision as Todd Wash takes charge
Speaking about the coaching changes, Canales explained that the decision followed an extensive evaluation of the team's performances and its remaining opportunities this season.
"There's just collecting a lot of information over the course of our time that really led to the decision," Canales stated.
"Ultimately—when I look at how many games we have in front of us, the position we're at in the division and really just wanted to get the most out of our guys.
"And really, making that decision, I take that responsibility very seriously as the head coach, and I know it's my responsibility to put the players in a position where they feel confident, where they feel ready to go.
The coaching changes see defensive line coach Todd Wash promoted to interim defensive coordinator. He'll also take responsibility for calling defensive plays, giving him an immediate opportunity to reshape the unit.
Wash brings considerable experience to the position, having spent 31 years coaching football, including 20 seasons in the NFL. He joined Carolina in 2023 and previously served as defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars for five seasons.
His most notable achievement came in 2017, when Jacksonville finished with the league's second-ranked defense before reaching the AFC Championship Game.
Meanwhile, outside linebackers coach and run game specialist AC Carter will receive additional responsibilities overseeing the defensive line. Secondary coach Renaldo Hill will continue managing the defensive backs.
Canales also confirmed that owner David Tepper and general manager Dan Morgan were consulted before the decision was made.
The dismissals represent a significant turning point for the Panthers as they attempt to get their 2026 campaign back on track.
