The former USC star wasted little time reminding everyone why he was one of the most celebrated quarterback prospects

C aleb Williams may be ready to take the leap from franchise quarterback to NFL superstar. The Chicago Bears entered the 2026 season with sky-high expectations after spending a full year building around their young signal-caller and installing Ben Johnson's offensive system.

On Sunday, Williams rewarded that faith with one of the most electrifying performances of his career, leading Chicago to a 59-37 victory over the Carolina Panthers and immediately inserting himself into the early MVP conversation. Yes, it's only one game.

But when a quarterback accounts for 334 total yards, four touchdowns, and helps orchestrate the highest-scoring season opener in franchise history, people are going to start talking. And they're already talking about Williams .

A breathtaking first half

The former USC star wasted little time reminding everyone why he was one of the most celebrated quarterback prospects of the past decade. Williams generated 248 yards of offense in the first half alone as the Bears and Panthers traded punches in a surprisingly entertaining shootout.

The game featured ties at 7-7, 21-21, 24-24 and 31-31, with neither team able to create separation early. Every time Carolina answered, Williams responded. His first touchdown came on a dazzling 9-yard scramble around the left side, capping a 73-yard drive that erased an early Panthers lead. Later, he found tight end Cole Kmet for a perfectly placed 22-yard touchdown pass, showcasing the arm talent that has made him one of the league's most exciting young quarterbacks.

Then came perhaps the most impressive play of the afternoon. Williams broke free for a 29-yard rushing touchdown, reaching a top speed of 20.80 miles per hour, the second-fastest recorded speed of his NFL career. The run highlighted the unique athleticism that separates him from most quarterbacks around the league. By halftime, the Panthers had no answers.

The Bears offense looks terrifying

As impressive as Williams was individually, the bigger story may be what Chicago's offense is becoming. Entering Year 2 under Ben Johnson , the unit looks faster, more creative and significantly more dangerous than it did a season ago.

The Bears finished with 552 total yards, including 291 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns. Williams threw for 269 yards and rushed for another 65 while posting a stellar 124.1 passer rating. The supporting cast played a major role.

D'Andre Swift ran wild, totaling 124 yards and three touchdowns on just 18 carries. Rookie running back Kyle Monangai added 100 yards and another score, giving Chicago one of the most productive rushing attacks of opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Kalif Raymond led the receiving corps with eight catches for 84 yards, while Rome Odunze delivered one of the game's signature highlights with a spectacular 47-yard reception that helped set up another Bears touchdown.

Williams' performance was historic

Generating 248 yards of offense in the first half placed him in exclusive company and underscored how rapidly he is developing into one of the NFL's elite quarterbacks. More importantly, he looked completely comfortable operating Johnson's offense.

That should be a scary thought for the rest of the NFC. Many young quarterbacks experience growing pains during their first few seasons. Williams appears to be accelerating through that process, displaying improved decision-making, better pocket awareness and a stronger understanding of how to attack defenses.

The result was a performance that felt less like a promising young quarterback having a big day and more like a superstar taking control of a game. Is MVP talk justified? Normally, MVP conversations in September should be treated cautiously.

A single game does not win an award. Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and several other elite quarterbacks will have plenty to say about the race over the next four months. But Williams has something working in his favor.
