"If I’m not getting surgery, I’m out there"—Joe Burrow quashes Week 2 injury panic
The Cincinnati Bengals star is available for the clash with the Houston Texans.

Joe Burrow isn't entering Week 2 at full strength, but the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback made it clear Wednesday that his back issue is not expected to prevent him from facing the Houston Texans .
Burrow revealed that he is dealing with back tightness after the season-opening victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the quarterback did not take significant throws during the portion of practice open to media.
He said he was taking “mental reps” while managing the issue but he is still expected to play on September 20 and when asked whether the Bengals might consider keeping him out against the Texans as a precaution, Burrow dismissed the suggestion.
“That's ridiculous,” Burrow said he added he was unsure exactly when the problem began, but noticed the soreness during the hours following Sunday's game, only sacked once against Tampa Bay .
He was, however, hit hard whilst rushing for a first down, but that play extended Cincinnati 's drive and eventually resulted in a touchdown.
Despite the contact and subsequent soreness, Burrow said he was comfortable with the decision to make the play and added, “If I'm not getting surgery, I'm out there.”
The Bengals quarterback has considerable experience playing through physical setbacks. In the 2025 NFL season, a turf toe injury forced him to miss nine games and marked the third time he had landed on injured reserve during his career.
Burrow has also demonstrated his willingness to play through pain in previous seasons. In 2022, he did not miss a game after undergoing an emergency appendectomy during training camp, while a calf injury the following year did not keep him from missing a snap.
Bengals have tough test of Super Bowl credentials vs. Texans
The 2026 NFL season carries additional importance for Burrow and Cincinnati after the Bengals missed the playoffs in each of the previous three seasons and the quarterback has spoken throughout the offseason about the urgency surrounding the team.
In Sunday's opener, Burrow completed 25 of 35 passes for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception that was returned for a score. Cincinnati still managed to defeat Tampa Bay 33-30.
And the Bengals quarterback acknowledged that he is continuing to learn when to take risks on the field and when to protect himself. His willingness to play through injuries, however, appears unlikely to change.
And that could be crucial in Week 2 against a significantly different challenge in Week 2 against the Texans , who lost an intense 36-31 game to the Buffalo Bills in its opener.
The Texans ' defense surrendered 36 points but still possesses a formidable pass rush led by Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr . The Bengals will need Burrow operating effectively against a unit expected to challenge him throughout the afternoon.
“We certainly have our work cut out for us,” Zac Taylor , head coach, said. “They have elite talent across the board on their defense, and it poses a lot of challenges for you.”
