Russell Wilson sparks Joe Burrow trade rumors ahead of Bengals' Week 1 kickoff: "I think he wants to leave"

The former NFL star says 2026 could become a breaking point if Cincinnati fails again

Joe Burrow has spent most of his Cincinnati Bengals career carrying expectations that come with being one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. Russell Wilson believes those expectations could eventually turn into something more uncomfortable if the results don't follow.

Speaking on CBS ahead of Cincinnati’s Week 1 opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , Wilson offered a striking prediction about Burrow’s future with the franchise.

“I think he's tired of losing,” Wilson said. “He's said that a few times. He's really focused on making sure that this is that special year.

“Listen, if it doesn't go well in Cincinnati this year, I'm just saying, I'm just telling you right now. I'm telling you right now, if it doesn't go well in Cincinnati this year, Joe Burrow's gone. I think he wants to leave.”

He added: “What's going to be interesting is, where does he go? There's some great teams that need a quarterback.”

Cincinnati hasn't reached the postseason since the 2022 season, while Burrow ’s career has repeatedly been interrupted by injury. He was limited to eight games last season because of a turf toe issue and has now played 10 or fewer games in three different years.

When healthy, though, Burrow remains one of the league’s best quarterbacks. That combination of elite play, repeated injuries and a prolonged playoff drought, creates obvious pressure on a Bengals team that has built its identity around him.

Burrow’s Week 1 start offered opposite message

If Burrow is frustrated, his play in the opener didn't suggest a quarterback mentally checking out. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown in the first half against Tampa Bay as Cincinnati built a 24-10 lead.

Wilson had actually praised that same mindset before delivering his trade prediction.

“I love Joe's mentality this offseason,” Wilson said. “His presence, and how focused he was and he just seems like he really wants to compete.”

That may ultimately be the more revealing part of the conversation. Burrow has made clear throughout his career that winning matters to him. What hasn't been established is that frustration would automatically lead to a trade demand.

Wilson believes 2026 could test that distinction. Cincinnati now has an entire season to prevent that conversation from becoming anything more than preseason speculation.
