Beyond rumors about Shedeur Sanders: The imminent decision regarding Dillon Gabriel facing Todd Monken
Gabriel's approaching deadline could force Cleveland into a major roster decision

The Cleveland Browns entered the 2026 NFL season with considerable uncertainty at quarterback, but six games into the campaign, their most pressing problem is no longer identifying a starter.
Deshaun Watson has rewarded head coach Todd Monken 's confidence with a strong return from his Achilles injury, helping Cleveland establish a 4-2 record while keeping Shedeur Sanders on the sidelines.
That success has complicated the situation for Dillon Gabriel , whose return from a preseason back injury now requires an important roster decision.
While Sanders has attracted attention following reports about his new representation and potential trade interest, Gabriel faces a much more immediate deadline that could determine whether he plays football again this season.
Gabriel has spent the regular season on injured reserve after sustaining a back injury during Cleveland's final preseason game.
The Browns placed him on injured reserve on August 30 before opening his 21-day practice window on October 6, allowing him to return to training without immediately joining the active roster.
That window closes on October 27, meaning Cleveland must activate Gabriel before the deadline if it wants him available during the remainder of the season.
Otherwise, the quarterback will remain on injured reserve and become ineligible to return in 2026.
The decision presents Monken and general manager Andrew Berry with a difficult question about how many quarterbacks the Browns need while Watson continues performing effectively.
Gabriel 's recovery and readiness will naturally influence the decision, but Cleveland must also consider the roster spot required to bring him back.
Sanders remains in Cleveland's plans
Sanders ' future has become another talking point after the former Colorado quarterback appointed Adie von Gontard , CEO of Young Money APAA Sports, as his representative.
The move prompted speculation that Sanders might be preparing for a trade before the NFL's November deadline, particularly given his limited opportunities behind Watson.
However, recent reporting suggests Cleveland is reluctant to part with the young quarterback.
Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot has indicated that the organization isn't actively looking to trade Sanders, while The Athletic's Jonathan Jones also questioned whether such a move would make sense.
"Still, even with that context, after talking to multiple league and team sources, I'd be more surprised if he dealt quarterback Shedeur Sanders before this year's trade deadline," Jones wrote.
Todd Monken has difficult choices
Watson 's performances have given Monken little reason to reconsider his starting quarterback.
Through six games, the veteran has completed 111 of 174 passes for 1,174 yards, seven touchdowns and just two interceptions.
His ability to protect the football has been particularly important for a Browns team that entered the season facing questions about whether he could return effectively after nearly two years away.
Watson 's contract expires after the 2026 season, however, making Cleveland's younger quarterbacks potentially valuable beyond the current campaign.
Monken must now balance that longer-term consideration against the immediate demands of maintaining a competitive roster.
Sanders may remain the subject of trade speculation, but Gabriel 's October 27 deadline represents the decision Cleveland cannot postpone.
