Browns’ QB controversy takes another turn after explosive Shedeur Sanders revelation
Robert Griffin III sparks new Browns drama with Deshaun Watson-Shedeur Sanders revelation.

The Cleveland Browns sparked controversy after announcing that Deshaun Watson will be their starting quarterback over Shedeur Sanders for the upcoming season. The decision was initially attributed to head coach Todd Monken , although some have suggested that the move may have been influenced by people higher up within the organization.
Now, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has joined the debate with a strong accusation, claiming he has information regarding how the decision was made.
“Sources tell me Deshaun Watson WAS NOT Todd Monken’s choice as the starter and many in the building thought Shedeur Sanders was the right move for the team on and off the field after Watson attacked the fans. Browns want Deshaun to play for his pay. The fans deserve better,” Griffin III wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
It remains unclear who Griffin III’s sources are or whether the information is accurate, but his comments have fueled a theory that had already been circulating: that Cleveland’s massive financial investment in Watson may have played a role in the final decision.
The quarterback signed a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract in 2022 , a commitment that has yet to deliver the expected results due to injuries, inconsistent play, and off-field issues.
Still, the situation could have been different if Sanders had performed at a higher level during his starts last season, as well as throughout training camp and this year’s preseason. The rookie could also get another opportunity to compete for the job at some point if Watson struggles to deliver early in the season.
For now, some Browns fans are questioning the decision to go with a veteran quarterback whose future remains uncertain instead of investing in the youth and potential of Sanders.
Cleveland will open the regular season on September 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars , a matchup that could begin to shape the future of the team’s highly debated quarterback competition.
