Shedeur Sanders has spent much of his time in Cleveland trying to establish himself as an NFL quarterback. His latest move, though, had nothing to do with the Browns ’ depth chart.

Sanders and Nike provided nearly 50 pairs of new cleats to Glenville High School’s varsity football team, offering a timely show of support for a program dealing with the fallout from the arrests of 11 players after a theft at a sporting goods store.

“So what we have here is a special delivery from Shedeur and Nike,” a Glenville associate said in a video shared online. “These are for our varsity guys. They’ll take the field in these this weekend, and we’re very appreciative.”

Denise White , CEO and founder of EAG Sports Management, framed the gesture as part of Sanders’ growing connection to the city.

“Cleveland is home, and this is what it looks like to pour back into the city and the young men coming up behind you,” White wrote. “Go get it, Glenville. It’s your time.”

Glenville facing serious consequences

The donation arrives at a difficult moment for the Tarblooders . On August 27, 11 student-athletes reportedly left supervision during a team trip and stole approximately $4,552 worth of merchandise from a sporting goods store.

A store employee described the scene in a 911 call: “They just came in and stole a bunch of stuff,” the employee told dispatchers.

Two players, Ty Martin and Eason Hankins , both 18, are scheduled to appear in Grove City Mayor’s Court on September 16. The remaining players are juveniles and face school disciplinary action. The district has been clear that the incident will carry consequences.

“Due to the fact that 11 members of the Glenville High School football team left supervision during this trip, those students will face disciplinary consequences,” the district said.

Glenville went on to defeat Olentangy Liberty 34-13, but the result was quickly overshadowed by what happened away from the field.

Sanders support sends different message

The cleat donation doesn't erase the arrests or the disciplinary process, but it gives the rest of the program something positive to rally around.

Glenville has become one of Ohio’s best-known high school football programs, winning three Division IV state championships and building a strong reputation for developing talent.

Sanders ’ gesture suggests that support for the players can continue without minimizing the seriousness of what happened. It also strengthens his bond with Cleveland after the Browns selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

That connection has become increasingly visible as Sanders settles into the city and embraces opportunities to engage with younger players around him.

Glenville still has difficult questions to answer. Sanders , however, made it clear that one scandal doesn't have to define every player in the program or determine what comes next.
