“The options are narrowing”: Deion Jr. sparks speculation about Shedeur Sanders' future in Cleveland
Browns quarterback’s path to a long-term role becomes less certain after Deshaun Watson wins the starting job

S hedeur Sanders ’ future with the Cleveland Browns is suddenly facing another major question after his brother, Deion Sanders Jr. , drew attention to commentary suggesting the quarterback’s options in Cleveland could be shrinking.
The Browns ’ decision to hand the starting job to Deshaun Watson has already changed the outlook for Sanders heading into the 2026 season.
Now, with speculation beginning to focus on Cleveland’s plans beyond the upcoming campaign, the former Colorado star could be facing an increasingly difficult route toward becoming the franchise’s long-term answer.
Jason Lloyd of Pro Football Network recently discussed the situation on 92.3 The Fan, arguing that Sanders’ status as a highly recognizable young quarterback could create an unusual dynamic if Cleveland decides to select another quarterback early in the 2027 NFL Draft.
"The path for Shedeur is narrowing to have any sort of legitimate future in Cleveland. It's not gone, but it's narrowing. He's not the starter now and, as we sit here, what do you think they want to do in the 2027 draft?" Lloyd said on 92.3 The Fan.
Deion Sanders Jr. subsequently shared the report, bringing renewed attention to the possibility that his younger brother may not have a straightforward future with the Browns.
Watson decision creates a new problem for Sanders
Cleveland’s quarterback competition had been one of the most closely watched battles of the Browns ’ offseason.
Sanders and Watson alternated first-team opportunities throughout training camp, with head coach Todd Monken repeatedly emphasizing that the decision would be based on the complete body of work rather than one preseason performance.
Ultimately, Watson won the competition.
Monken said the veteran was ahead of Sanders over the offseason and into training camp, although he also acknowledged that the younger quarterback had narrowed the gap considerably.
The Browns will therefore begin the season with Watson under center when they travel to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars on Sept. 13.
That decision does not necessarily mean Sanders has no future in Cleveland. Watson has struggled to remain healthy since arriving from Houston, playing only 19 games for the Browns across four seasons. He has also missed substantial time because of injuries and suspension.
However, Lloyd’s argument centers on what could happen if Cleveland decides it needs another quarterback altogether.
Sanders remains an intriguing developmental option, but his rookie season did not establish him as an unquestioned franchise quarterback.
He eventually became Cleveland’s starter during the final portion of the 2025 season, but his production was inconsistent, leaving the organization with questions to answer.
That makes the 2026 season particularly important. If Watson performs well and remains healthy, Sanders could struggle to find a path to significant playing time.
Conversely, if Watson falters, Sanders will have an opportunity to demonstrate that he can command the offense and force Cleveland to reconsider its plans.
The Browns ’ broader quarterback situation also remains unsettled. The team has other young options on the roster, including Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green , meaning Sanders is not operating in isolation.
For now, Cleveland insists it is excited about Sanders ’ development. Monken has publicly praised the progress he made during the offseason and stressed that the starting decision is not necessarily a judgment on his long-term potential.
Still, the 2027 draft could become a pivotal part of the story.
If the Browns decide to use an early selection on another quarterback, Sanders could find himself competing not only with Watson but also with a highly drafted newcomer. That is the scenario Lloyd believes could make his position increasingly uncomfortable.
Deion Sanders Jr. ’s decision to share those comments has only added fuel to the speculation. Whether it was intended as a warning, a simple reaction to the report or merely an attempt to highlight the uncertainty surrounding his brother, it has placed fresh attention on a question Cleveland may eventually have to answer.
For Sanders , the most effective response will likely come on the field. A strong season, particularly if he earns an opportunity to start, could change the conversation quickly.
But with Watson currently in control and the Browns already looking toward the future, the pressure surrounding Sanders’ Cleveland tenure has undoubtedly increased.
