Todd Monken's defense of Deshaun Watson is reaching dangerous levels, as Shedeur Sanders watched potential implosion

No one expected much of anything from the Cleveland Browns this season, but even head coach Todd Monken was likely surprised by just how terrible his team was in Week 1.

The Browns got utterly destroyed by the Jacksonville Jaguars , with a late touchdown saving the team from a true blowout. The game ended 34-10 , with fans calling for a change at quarterback following Deshaun Watson 's struggles.

Watson was especially terrible. The final counting stats don’t tell the whole story, as a lot of stat-padding was done in the second half. The veteran quarterback took five sacks, threw a bad interception, and luckily recovered one of his fumbles . Pro Football Focus rated Watson as the worst QB in the league in Week 1.

Todd Monken truly believes Deshaun Watson isn't the Browns' biggest problem

More than anything, Watson simply didn’t look capable of operating an efficient offense . Watson’s trump card over Shedeur Sanders in their quarterback competition was that he was a veteran with more composure and a better understanding of how to keep the whole offense on the same page.

That absolutely didn’t shine through in Week 1. Even Monken admitted as much, but it seems like he continues absolving Watson of blame that just about every Browns fan believes he deserves .

If Watson continues playing so poorly, Monken will have no choice but to turn to Sanders. But it very much seems like Watson has quite a long leash - at least that’s what the head coach is insinuating. He believes the Browns’ problem go much further than the quarterback position.
