Brian Schottenheimer finds his formula: Why Dallas must stick with running game after crushing Philadelphia

Dallas dominated Philadelphia after abandoning its pass-heavy approach, raising questions about why the adjustment took so long

Dak Prescott has spent much of the season carrying the responsibility for the Dallas Cowboys ' offense, but Monday night's victory over the Philadelphia Eagles offered a reminder that even an accomplished quarterback benefits from having reliable support on the ground.

After consecutive defeats exposed problems with Dallas' offensive approach, head coach Brian Schottenheimer made a significant adjustment against the Eagles , placing greater emphasis on establishing the running game rather than relying almost exclusively on Prescott's passing.

The change produced immediate results. Dallas rushed for 204 yards on 38 attempts, overwhelming Philadelphia on its way to a convincing 38-21 victory that improved the Cowboys ' record to 3-4.

Prescott finished with 212 passing yards and three touchdowns, producing a 118.1 passer rating despite attempting just 27 throws.

The contrast with Dallas' previous two games was striking, suggesting Schottenheimer may finally have discovered how to get the best from an offense that entered the season with considerable expectations.

Running back Javonte Williams was central to Dallas' resurgence, delivering a career-high 155 rushing yards on 25 carries.

His performance forced Philadelphia to account for the ground attack, creating opportunities for Prescott to operate without facing the same relentless pressure that had disrupted him in previous games.

"We knew we had to create some balance," Prescott said afterward, acknowledging the importance of establishing a dependable running game.

That balance had been largely absent during defeats against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers .

Dallas ran the ball just 13 times against Tampa Bay before recording 15 rushing attempts across 78 offensive plays in Green Bay.

Opponents exploited that predictability by pressuring Prescott , who completed only 20 of 38 passes for 194 yards without a touchdown against additional rushers across those two games.

Against Philadelphia, Williams ' productivity allowed the Cowboys to dictate the tempo rather than constantly asking Prescott to overcome difficult situations.

Schottenheimer faces important decision

Although Monday's performance represented significant progress, the quality of Philadelphia's defense provides some necessary context.

The Eagles entered the game with four consecutive defeats, significant injury problems and a rushing defense that had struggled throughout the season.

Nevertheless, Dallas' previous victory against the Houston Texans also featured a more balanced offensive approach, with 25 rushing attempts helping produce a 34-30 win.

The consistency between those successful performances suggests Schottenheimer should consider making the running game a permanent foundation of his offensive strategy.

Doing so would also reduce the pressure on Prescott while creating more favorable opportunities for receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens .

Opportunity to build momentum against Cardinals

Dallas will attempt to extend its resurgence when the Arizona Cardinals visit AT&T Stadium on Sunday.

Arizona enters the matchup with a 2-5 record after allowing the Denver Broncos to rush for 159 yards, presenting another opportunity for Williams to influence the outcome.

Schottenheimer has already emphasized the importance of improved blocking from his receiving corps, including Pickens , highlighting the collective effort required to maintain an effective ground attack.

The Cowboys remain below .500, meaning one impressive victory cannot erase their earlier struggles.

However, the win over Philadelphia demonstrated that Dallas can control games without depending entirely on Prescott 's arm.

Schottenheimer 's challenge is to turn that successful adjustment into a consistent approach rather than allowing the offense to return to its previous habits.
