Calls for NFL to investigate Joey Porter Jr. following suspicious move by the Cowboys
The cornerback is ready to play days after leaving Pittsburgh

J oey Porter Jr. is preparing to make his Dallas Cowboys debut against the Houston Texans , and the timing has triggered a fresh wave of suspicion among frustrated Pittsburgh Steelers fans.
Porter missed Pittsburgh’s first three games while dealing with a back injury and conditioning concerns, yet he arrived in Dallas this week without an injury designation and is expected to play Sunday.
That abrupt change has led some supporters to demand the NFL look into whether Porter was truly unable to play for the Steelers , particularly after months of failed contract negotiations preceded his trade.
Porter had been listed with a back problem throughout training camp and remained inactive through the opening three weeks, although his practice participation increased before the trade.
NFL.com reported that his final Steelers designation combined “not injury related/conditioning/back,” while Porter himself said in late September that he was still working toward being “100 percent.”
The Steelers finally moved the 26-year-old to Dallas for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round selection after failing to reach agreement on a new contract.
Porter is entering the final year of his rookie deal, turning what had become a prolonged Pittsburgh standoff into an immediate fresh start.
Fans question sudden Cowboys availability
The sight of Porter practising with Dallas and immediately moving toward game action predictably drew reaction online.
“NFL should investigate Joey Porter Jr and his agent for faking a back injury,” one Steelers-focused account wrote, while another fan claimed, “He blatantly faked an injury.”
Others were far less convinced, pointing out that proving an injury was fabricated would require far more than frustration over the timing of his return.
Dallas ’ own plan also cuts against the idea that Porter is simply stepping straight back into a full workload, with reports indicating the Cowboys intend to limit his snaps against Houston.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Porter impressed immediately but stressed Dallas still wanted to see consecutive strong practices before committing to his role.
“Go out there and do what he did yesterday, which was really impressive,” Schottenheimer said, adding that communication and understanding of the defense were also important considerations.
Dallas also doesn't expect Porter to play every defensive snap in his first appearance, with the coaching staff preparing a specific package for him.
That cautious approach is consistent with a player returning after a lengthy absence rather than one who has been playing and training normally throughout the opening month.
Porter gets fresh start with Cowboys
The Cowboys need help immediately after injuries hit their secondary, making Porter an attractive addition regardless of the circumstances surrounding his exit from Pittsburgh.
Dallas sent significant draft capital to acquire a cornerback who has started 41 NFL games and recorded 31 passes defended through his first three seasons.
Porter now has an opportunity to shift attention away from the contract dispute and questions surrounding his back by performing against Houston. His return may continue to frustrate Steelers fans, but calls for an investigation remain based on suspicion rather than evidence.
