Cowboys legend calls out Brian Schottenheimer for his ill-advised comments about George Pickens
Brian Schottenheimer’s criticism of George Pickens doesn’t sit well with Cowboys legend

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has drawn criticism for publicly challenging George Pickens , prompting franchise legend Dez Bryant to question whether the coach’s approach could create unnecessary pressure for the star receiver.
Ahead of Dallas’ matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, Schottenheimer emphasized that Pickens must contribute beyond catching passes.
The coach specifically highlighted blocking responsibilities and helping the running game, stressing that every player must embrace a team-first mentality.
While some believe the public criticism could motivate Pickens to improve, Bryant sees potential problems with handling the situation this way.
Responding to former ESPN reporter Ed Werder on X, Bryant reminded critics that Pickens has emotions and shouldn’t be judged solely on his performances.
“At the end of the day...Pickens is still human,” Bryant wrote on X. “He has emotions. The Cowboys only go to him in notable, critical situations and rely on him to make a play...all because of his contract.
“The psychology behind it is what’s messed up, and it doesn’t work in his favor when the world thinks he doesn’t care… let’s really talk about it.”
Schottenheimer , however, believes Pickens ’ responsibilities extend beyond making receptions, as the coach explained that effective blocking helps create running lanes, while receivers who contribute away from the ball can make the offense more dangerous.
George Pickens responds as Cowboys face mounting pressure
Pickens offered a measured response when reporters asked about Schottenheimer’s remarks. Rather than challenging his coach, the receiver maintained that he was following instructions and emphasized the importance of improving collectively.
“I’m doing what they tell me to do,” Pickens said according to NBC Sports. “I feel like if you narrow the comments down, you’re talking about the team. Most definitely, I feel like as a team, just keep improving.”
Pickens ’ response seemed to downplay any potential tension between the two, although it didn’t resolve the debate over whether Schottenheimer should have addressed his concerns publicly.
The receiver’s production highlights why he remains valuable to Dallas. Through six games, he had recorded 33 receptions for 428 yards, establishing himself as an important component of the passing attack. His longest reception was 53 yards, demonstrating his ability to generate explosive plays.
Nevertheless, Pickens has faced questions about his involvement, particularly with CeeDee Lamb receiving more targets. Finding ways to utilize both receivers effectively will be crucial as Dallas attempts to revive an inconsistent offense.
Pickens also enters the season under the franchise tag, leaving his long-term future uncertain. Although he hasn’t publicly expressed frustration over his contract situation, the circumstances add another dimension to Bryant’s concerns about the pressure surrounding him.
Schottenheimer’s expectations aren’t necessarily unreasonable because blocking, discipline and off-ball contributions matter, especially when an offense struggles to establish its running game, but potentially exposing a player to additional public scrutiny is a risky move.
Whether Schottenheimer’s comments inspire Pickens or simply intensify the spotlight remains uncertain.
