Cowboys offensive coordinator sets his sights on Pittsburgh as Dallas continues to struggle

Dallas has barely begun the season, and the Cowboys already have something to say about the work one of their players received in Pittsburgh.

T he Cowboys did not get the debut they expected, and while they are still trying to find answers after their first game , a situation that began far from Dallas ended up putting the spotlight on one of their new players.

The season began with a 28-20 loss to the New York Giants , a result that brought some of the questions surrounding the team in 2025 back to the table.

The defense was one of the biggest problems. The Giants finished with 394 total yards, including 165 on the ground , and converted nine of their 11 third-down attempts.

But Dallas did not leave the game with good news in other areas either. Communication issues and some poor reads led to mistakes, while injuries to Malik Hooker and DeMarvion Overshown left even more work to do before Week 2 .

With all of that on the table, the Cowboys already had plenty to fix. However, the arrival of Broderick Jones opened up a different conversation, one that is not only about what the tackle can do in Dallas , but also about what happened before he got there.

Jones arrived in Dallas from the Steelers during cutdown day, but from the start, it was clear that the Cowboys could not simply put him on the line and expect immediate results.

The team had already made it clear that the tackle would have to adjust to certain differences between the techniques he learned in Pittsburgh and what Dallas expects from him .

Now, Klayton Adams, Dallas' offensive coordinator, addressed the subject again before a practice. And one of his comments took the conversation in a different direction.

Adams explained that the physical part of the process would take time, something that can be expected from a player who has just joined a new team. But then he added: “Not sure how those things fell through the cracks where he was at.”

And that's the detail that stands out.

The comment drew attention because Adams was no longer talking only about what Jones needs to learn with the Cowboys. He was also pointing to certain things that, according to Adams, were not where the team expected them to be when the player arrived in Dallas .

The Cowboys also do not appear willing to wait too long to start seeing progress. Adams made it clear that the team expected to see a significant change already.

Jones and his adjustment process

During his time with the Steelers, Jones struggled to establish himself, and he himself pointed to one of the factors that made the process more difficult: constantly switching between left and right tackle .

“Bouncing around positions” was how he described the situation, explaining that not being able to settle on one side made it harder to feel comfortable and get familiar with the players around him.

Dallas has taken a different approach.

The plan now is for Jones to focus on right tackle, compete for the position and have the opportunity to become familiar with one spot. The team does not appear interested in repeating the dynamic that the player himself identified as a challenge during his time in Pittsburgh .

Now Dallas has to show what Jones can do

Adams' comments may raise questions about how Jones was developed before arriving in Dallas, but the most important part will begin when the player has to show what he can do with this new opportunity.

And while the Cowboys look for answers after falling to 0-1 , they will also have to find out whether everything they are trying to change with Broderick Jones can turn into results.

The next test will come against the Washington Commanders .
