Over the weekend, Dak Prescott etched a new chapter in Dallas Cowboys history, becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in career passing touchdowns. The record fell in the fourth quarter of a 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders , when Prescott connected with CeeDee Lamb for a touchdown on third-and-seven.

After the game, Prescott made no effort to hide his emotion as he reflected on the moment’s deeper meaning. He spoke about his mother, Peggy , who died in 2013 at age 52 after a battle with colon cancer, and said he felt her presence on such a special day.

“I woke up this morning a little emotional, way more emotional than normal,” Prescott said. “I don't know if it had a part in it. God knew it was going to happen today, and I was going to break this record. I just felt my mom. My mom was never short or hesitant to tell me how proud she was of me. She was never, never, never short of that. I could just hear that. That's enough.”

When Peggy died, Prescott was still at Mississippi State . Despite the devastating personal loss, he returned to the field just days later and kept building the career that would eventually take him to the NFL .

In 2016 , the Cowboys selected him in the fourth round with the 135th overall pick , taking a chance on a quarterback who had grown up as a lifelong fan of the team. Since then, Prescott has become one of the league’s most accomplished passers: a four-time Pro Bowl selection, the NFL leader in completions in 2025 , and the 2022 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

Against Washington, he completed 26 of 31 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns—an efficien t, dominant performance capped by the franchise record that now places him alone at the top of Dallas history.
