Dak Prescott’s unfiltered mentality sets high-stakes ultimatum for 2026
The Cowboys QB isn’t looking for a reset. He’s focused on becoming a smarter, better leader.

D ak Prescott is not looking to reinvent himself heading into the 2026 NFL season . The Dallas Cowboys quarterback understands that his next step is about improving his mental approach to the game and making better decisions on the field.
According to Jon Machota of The Athletic , Prescott explained that his main area of improvement is related to reading the game and understanding how every play impacts the rest of the team.
“Every part of the game. I just think the more that you play, sometimes it gets easier to see things coming. But that doesn’t allow me to know exactly what’s about to happen. So really just staying in the moment, staying where my feet are, not trying to hit a home run each and every play. But just playing the play individually, understanding that every decision I make has an effect on the whole team. So it’s not just one area.”
That mindset is exactly what the Cowboys expect from their offensive leader. Although Prescott had an impressive individual season in 2025, throwing for 4,552 passing yards and 30 touchdowns while starting all 17 regular-season games , his production was not enough to lead Dallas to the playoffs.
The Cowboys finished with a 7-9-1 record and once again missed the postseason despite having one of the league’s most talented offenses.
With CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens forming one of the NFL’s most explosive receiving duos, along with the return of running back Javonte Williams , who rushed for more than 1,200 yards last season , Prescott knows Dallas has the weapons needed to compete.
However, the quarterback understands that statistics are no longer enough.
“Last year was a good year, but I want to be better than that,” Prescott said.
For Dallas to return to playoff contention, Prescott will need to turn his impressive individual numbers into team success. The veteran quarterback’s evolution will depend on his ability to control the game and make the right decisions in critical moments.
