Dallas Cowboys’ defense completely collapses in painful loss as fans demand answers
The Cowboys promised a defensive revival. Instead, Week 1 exposed the same problems that haunted them last season.

The Dallas Cowboys ’ debut in the 2026 NFL season left more questions than answers, especially on a defense that was expected to take a major step forward. The new defense designed by coordinator Christian Parker was exposed for much of the game by the New York Giants and young quarterback Jaxson Dart , once again raising concerns about a unit that was expected to undergo a major transformation.
During the offseason, Dallas had generated optimism after a previous campaign defined by defensive struggles under Matt Eberflus , when the team allowed 511 points , the highest total in the entire league. The expectation was that the adjustments, new additions, and the return of key players like DeRon Bland, Shavon Revel, and DeMarvion Overshown would help spark a defensive resurgence.
But the reality in Week 1 was completely different. The Giants imposed their will and built a 28-14 lead with just over seven minutes remaining, while also dominating possession by controlling the clock for 31 of the 52 minutes played .
As if the loss wasn’t enough, Dallas suffered another major blow with DeMarvion Overshown’s injury . The linebacker, who entered the season expected to become one of the leaders of the defense in the final year of his contract, left the game during the fourth quarter after suffering a hamstring injury.
DeMarvion Overshown raises concerns for the Cowboys
Several reporters covering the Cowboys reported that Overshown was listed as questionable to return to the game.
Jon Machota of The Athletic explained the play where the injury occurred:
“DeMarvion Overshown tripped on the previous play and immediately grabbed the back of his right leg. He’s questionable with a hamstring injury. It looks like his night could be done.”
The situation represents a major problem for Dallas, as one of the defense’s biggest concerns was precisely the lack of depth at linebacker. Overshown and Dee Winters were the starters, and the former’s absence forced third-round rookie Jaishawn Barham into an unexpected role.
Overshown was also responsible for wearing the defensive communication device known as the “green dot,” a key responsibility for organizing the unit on the field.
The Dallas Cowboys ultimately lost 28-20 to the New York Giants, with no clear signs of defensive improvement. Now, they will hope things improve in their second divisional matchup against the Washington Commanders.
