Haley Cavinder has once again found herself at the center of an NFL conversation, but this time, she’s making it clear that she isn’t interested in taking the criticism too seriously.

The wife of Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson recently shared a playful Instagram reel filmed at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Wearing Ferguson’s Cowboys jersey, black leggings and white shoes, Cavinder showed off her football skills while poking fun at one of the most debated labels attached to women connected to professional athletes.

In the caption, Cavinder wrote, “wt* is a WAG,” seemingly using the phrase sarcastically rather than embracing its traditional meaning. The abbreviation, which stands for wives and girlfriends of athletes, has become commonplace in sports culture.

However, it’s also sparked plenty of debate because some women associated with professional athletes feel the term reduces their identities to their relationships.

Cavinder’s post quickly attracted reactions from fans, including one person who questioned her financial motivations with the comment, “Someone who needs $$?” Rather than responding angrily, the social media personality appeared to brush off the remark with a sarcastic comeback.

“Ya let the girlies get their bag,” Cavinder replied.

Her response suggests that she wasn’t particularly bothered by the criticism and was instead willing to play along with the joke.

Cavinder isn’t the first high-profile NFL wife to discuss the controversial abbreviation. Claire Kittle , the wife of San Francisco 49ers star George Kittle , has previously shared a more nuanced view of the term.

During an appearance on the Up & Adams Show, Claire acknowledged that WAG is a convenient way of grouping together the wives and girlfriends of athletes. However, she also pointed out that the phrase has often been given a negative meaning and that women in these circles regularly face criticism.

Other NFL wives have been less comfortable with the label. Kylie Kelce, wife of former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce , has previously admitted that the term deeply bothered her. Kristin Juszczyk , wife of 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk , has also expressed frustration with the way the abbreviation is used.

The timing comes shortly after a major milestone in her personal life. Cavinder and Ferguson married at Miami’s Biltmore Hotel, following their relationship that began in September 2023. The couple became engaged in April 2025, and Ferguson’s former Cowboys teammate Will Grier reportedly officiated their wedding.

On the football field, Ferguson is also coming off an impressive season. He recorded 82 receptions for 600 yards and a career-best eight touchdowns before signing a four-year, $52 million contract extension with Dallas.

Cavinder , meanwhile, played college basketball at Fresno State and Miami before building a significant social media following. With careers and identities of their own, the couple appears more than comfortable handling the attention that comes with being part of the NFL spotlight.
