Jerry Jones sends Cowboys fans a defiant message about Super Bowl hopes

The Dallas Cowboys owner isn't giving up on his team after just one game.

It wasn't quite the start to the 2026 NFL season that the Dallas Cowboys were anticipating in Week 1. Playing a division rival on the road shouldn't be considered an overly negative development, but Dallas had built up a lot of hope with a strong offseason.

But in the team's season opener against the New York Giants , similar weaknesses from a season ago came back to haunt them. Naturally, that has analysts and fans souring on the potential for the Cowboys this season. Considered to be a dark horse Super Bowl contender for some, those high expectations have now fully been checked.

Jerry Jones is always optimistic about his Dallas Cowboys

Don't tell that to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones , though. Ever the optimist, Jones needs to only look back one season in order to inspire hope for himself and for Cowboys fans. A loss in Week 1 isn't deterring Jones from fortifying his Super Bowl aspirations .

I'll go to the two teams that played in the Super Bowl last year. They both lost their opening games. Both teams were put together, actually, from the back down. They surprisingly didn't have the continuity that you might expect a Super Bowl to have. But both of those teams lost their opening game. Both of them evolved as the season went along. Bear in mind, it's important — I've lost a game and won the Super Bowl.

Jones referenced his 1993 Cowboys team , which lost the opening game then went on to win the Super Bowl. In fact, they were the first team in NFL history to start a season 0-2 and win the Lombardi Trophy in the same season. The 2001 New England Patriots and 2007 New York Giants later joined that club.
