The Dallas Cowboys losing their Week 1 game to the New York Giants , in a division game on the road, shouldn’t have most people batting an eye. But there was a surprising amount of hype coming out of Cowboys camp this summer.

In their second season under head coach Brian Schottenheimer , with an emphasis placed on improving the defense over the offseason, expectations were somewhat high for Dallas. That came to a screeching halt against the Giants; mostly because the defense didn’t look any better than last season, but also because the offense looked shockingly mediocre .

Micah Parsons says Dallas Cowboys have "too much talent" to not succeed in 2026

Cowboys fans are panicking a little bit, but one of the team’s former superstars isn’t sounding the alarm just yet. Micah Parsons , who was traded to the Green Bay Packers from Dallas just before the 2025 season, has indirectly implored Cowboys fans to not overreact to Week 1 . While speaking about Dallas’ loss on his podcast, Parsons explained why he thinks Week 1 may have been a fluke.

“ New [defensive coordinator], new players. One football camp can’t put it all together, bro. You can see [George Pickens], you know, wasn’t really himself yet. They have too much talent for it not to progress… GP won’t have a game like that again. That’s another one of them things where it’s like stats, they’ll deceive you .”

The Cowboys could have used Parsons on Sunday Night Football , although the defensive end is currently still going through the recovery process following a torn ACL and meniscus suffered last December. Parsons is currently on the PUP list , meaning he will miss the Packers’ first four games. There’s no firm date for his return just yet.
