‘My dead mom can coach them better’: Michael Irvin tears into struggling Cowboys

The Cowboys legend didn't hold back after Dallas surrendered a late lead against Arizona

Michael Irvin delivered a furious verdict on the Dallas Cowboys following their latest defeat, declaring that even his late mother could do a better job coaching the struggling team.

The Hall of Fame wide receiver made the explosive remark during an appearance on ESPN’s First Take on Monday, a day after Dallas squandered a fourth-quarter lead and suffered a heartbreaking 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Irvin’s outburst came as Stephen A. Smith suggested an unconventional solution to the Cowboys’ problems: bringing ESPN colleague and former NFL head coach Rex Ryan onto the Dallas sideline.

Smith argued that Ryan could make a significant difference with just four days to prepare, considering the disappointing performances the team has produced throughout the season.

Irvin was even less restrained in his comments. He insisted the Cowboys had reached rock bottom, suggesting there was no worse level of performance for the franchise to sink to.

“There is no such thing as lower than this, or worse than this, or not as good as this. They are the worst.” Irvin said. ”My dead mom can coach them better."

The latest defeat offered plenty of reasons for anger. Dallas appeared to have secured the victory after building a 30-24 advantage with just seconds remaining in regulation.

However, Arizona backup quarterback Gardner Minshew sparked a remarkable turnaround after replacing Jacoby Brissett late in the third quarter, helping the Cardinals produce a late touchdown with six seconds left.

Kicker Chad Ryland missed the extra point that could have secured the win, forcing overtime. However, he eventually redeemed himself by converting a 42-yard field goal to complete Arizona’s comeback.

Irvin demands major changes after Cowboys collapse

Irvin had already called for a sweeping overhaul in a video shared through his podcast account, arguing that Dallas needed to dismantle its defensive setup and make significant changes. His animated reaction while watching the final moments demonstrated just how deeply the defeat had affected him.

Arizona running back Tyler Allgeier played a major role in the comeback, recording a spectacular 63-yard touchdown run, another 52-yard carry and a receiving touchdown. Dallas' defense, which had looked considerably better earlier in the contest, struggled to contain the Cardinals after Minshew entered the game.

Former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci also expressed his disappointment, describing the performance as embarrassing.

He questioned the team's effort and argued that established leaders, including Dak Prescott, Quinnen Williams and CeeDee Lamb , needed to take responsibility for the atmosphere inside the locker room.

DiNucci also suggested that the constant attention and distractions surrounding the Cowboys organization could make it difficult for players to remain completely focused on football.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer is consequently facing growing scrutiny as Dallas searches for answers. His 10-14-1 record since taking charge has added to the pressure, particularly with the Cowboys struggling to establish consistency.

Dallas now faces an important road matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. With the team's playoff hopes becoming increasingly uncertain, the Cowboys desperately need a response.
