Sell high: Why the Cowboys should explore a Joe Milton trade right now

The young quarterback checks many of the boxes that intrigue personnel executives

J oe Milton III may have delivered the most exciting performance of the Dallas Cowboys’ preseason , but that doesn’t mean the franchise should keep him. In fact, Milton’s breakout showing against the Arizona Cardinals may have created the perfect opportunity for Dallas to capitalize on his rising value before reality catches up with expectations.

The young quarterback was electric in the Cowboys’ 34-13 preseason victory, completing 9 of 13 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score. He looked confident, decisive, and far more comfortable than he did earlier in his NFL career. For a player who entered the league with questions about his consistency and development, it was exactly the type of performance that gets front offices around the league paying attention.

But while many Cowboys fans are wondering whether Milton has done enough to secure the backup quarterback job behind Dak Prescott, Dallas should be asking a different question: Can this performance help bring back valuable assets in a trade? The answer may be yes.

Milton's value may never be higher

Quarterback remains the NFL's most valuable position , and teams are constantly searching for young passers with upside. Milton checks many of the boxes that intrigue personnel executives. He possesses elite arm strength, impressive athleticism, and flashes of playmaking ability that few quarterbacks can match physically.

Those traits were on full display against Arizona , where he turned limited opportunities into an eye-catching stat line. The problem for Dallas is that potential alone doesn't guarantee future success. Milton remains an unfinished product. One strong preseason performance does not erase concerns about his accuracy, decision-making, and overall readiness to lead an NFL offense over an extended period.

The Cowboys have to determine whether his long-term value to the organization exceeds what they could potentially receive from a quarterback-needy team. At the moment, the market may be more favorable than it has ever been.

Several teams could be interested

There is no shortage of franchises looking for answers at quarterback. The Cleveland Browns stand out as a potential destination. Although Deshaun Watson reportedly won the starting job entering the 2026 season, few around the league view him as a long-term solution. Shedeur Sanders remains a developing player, and Cleveland could benefit from adding another young quarterback with upside.

Milton would offer something different: a physically gifted passer without the baggage that has surrounded Watson or the intense scrutiny that follows Sanders. Other quarterback-needy teams could also view Joe as a worthwhile developmental project, especially if they believe they can refine his mechanics and decision-making.

For Dallas , that interest could translate into draft capital or other assets that better align with the team's immediate championship aspirations. Perhaps the strongest argument for trading Milton is the Cowboys' own evaluation of the quarterback room.

Despite Milton's impressive preseason showing, head coach Brian Schottenheimer has made it clear that the competition for the backup role remains close. "I think quite honestly, if you would just take the training camp competition, it's probably neck and neck, and Sam may be a little bit ahead," Schottenheimer said. That statement speaks volumes.
