M ark Shenefield, the Dallas Cowboys fan known as Tattoo Mark, died unexpectedly on the morning of Tuesday, October 13, CBS Texas reported. The cause of death has not been announced. CBS Texas reporter Doug Dunbar also confirmed the news in a post on X.

Shenefield had been a Cowboys superfan for 24 years. His many team-themed tattoos made him a familiar face in the fan community, and the Cowboys featured him in a video about the team’s most devoted supporters.

What is known about Tattoo Mark’s cause of death

His health history has drawn attention since his death, but it does not establish what caused it. A 2023 CBS Texas report said Shenefield had congestive heart failure and had lost close family members to heart disease. No report has confirmed that his heart condition played a role in his death.

Mark was also known for his work with children in hospitals. Through the Tattoo Mark Foundation, he organized teddy-bear drives and supported children receiving care in medical and mental health facilities.

His loyalty to Dallas was part of his identity long before he became a familiar face among Cowboys fans. Shenefield got his first Cowboys tattoo in 1985 and had 21 team-related tattoos by 2023. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones once described him as a “walking billboard” for the team.

The teddy-bear drives also had a personal meaning for “Tattoo Mark” . In 2023, he told CBS that his own battle with congestive heart failure helped him understand how difficult it can be for children to face illness. That year marked his fourth consecutive holiday drive, with bears planned for children at 10 Texas hospitals.

A statement shared with CBS described Shenefield as an enthusiastic member of the Cowboys community and said his kindness would be his greatest legacy. The foundation said it would share information about memorial arrangements.
