From NFL bust to CFL royalty: Chad Kelly signs historic $5.5M megadeal in Toronto
From NFL disappointment to CFL history: Chad Kelly just changed the quarterback market forever.

Chad Kelly made history in the Canadian Football League (CFL) by becoming the first player to surpass $1 million annually during the league’s salary cap era, reshaping the quarterback market.
The Toronto Argonauts quarterback signed a five-year contract extension worth $5.55 million , according to multiple reports. Although the team did not reveal the financial details of the agreement following the official announcement, the deal could reach $5,805,250 with incentives and bonuses, according to CTV News .
With this new contract, Kelly surpassed BC Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke , who was the CFL’s highest-paid player in 2026 with a salary of $684,700.
Kelly was set to become a free agent at the end of the season, but the Argonauts decided to secure one of the most important pieces of their offense with a historic deal.
“But coming (to the CFL) was the best decision I ever made in my life,” Kelly said during a press conference on Tuesday. “I have a beautiful family, I’ve come to love Canada on a whole other level.
“I never knew I could come to love a place so much (more) than my home and now this is my home forever, I’m just thankful to be in this situation. ”
From NFL Mr. Irrelevant to CFL star
Kelly’s journey has been one of the most unique stories in professional football. He was selected as Mr. Irrelevant in the 2017 NFL Draft after being taken with the final overall pick, but he was never able to establish himself in the league.
After several attempts to find a place in the NFL, Kelly joined the CFL in 2022 and quickly became a key figure for the Toronto Argonauts, helping the team win the Grey Cup in his first season.
He is also the nephew of Buffalo Bills legend Jim Kelly.
During the 2026 season, Chad Kelly posted the best campaign of his career in Canada, throwing for 5,067 yards and 33 touchdowns, numbers that helped convince the Argonauts to make him the first million-dollar quarterback of the CFL’s new era.
