The awkward reunion between Troy Aikman and Joe Buck in ESPN booth: “It looks tense”
The longtime NFL broadcasters returned to Monday Night Football after reports of an argument

The cameras turned toward Joe Buck and Troy Aikman before Monday night's game between the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Commanders , and viewers were watching for something other than the usual pregame analysis.
Just one week after reports emerged of an argument between the veteran broadcasters, their return to ESPN's commentary booth prompted speculation about whether their professional relationship had suffered.
Neither man acknowledged the reported disagreement during the broadcast, and there was no obvious confrontation. Nevertheless, their appearance generated considerable discussion among fans already aware of the uncertainty surrounding Aikman's future.
The underlying issue is significant as Buck has secured his long-term future with ESPN, while Aikman is approaching free agency after five seasons with the network.
The speculation intensified after cameras showed the broadcasters together ahead of kickoff, prompting viewers to offer competing interpretations of their interactions.
"Troy Aikman looks like he hates Joe Buck now," one NFL fan wrote on X. Another commented: "It's so awkward watching Buck and Aikman right now." A third viewer suggested: "It looks TENSE in the booth with Buck and Aikman."
According to Front Office Sports, Buck and Aikman had an argument before the previous week's game between the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams .
The reported disagreement was resolved sufficiently for them to complete that broadcast without any noticeable problems on air.
Aikman's ESPN contract uncertainty
The timing of the alleged confrontation has attracted attention because the broadcasters are approaching very different stages of their ESPN contracts.
Buck , 57, reportedly signed a six-year extension worth approximately $108 million, securing his position with the network well into the next decade.
Aikman , 59, is entering the final months of his five-year, $90 million agreement, which runs through ESPN's Super Bowl broadcast on February 14, 2027.
Speaking on Dallas radio station 96.7 The Ticket, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback addressed speculation surrounding his future without confirming details of the reported argument.
"There's probably a time and a place for all that. I don't know if now is the time," Aikman said.
"I'll broadcast through this season and I'll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens."
His comments left open the possibility of a departure despite his longstanding relationship with Buck .
Does Aikman want to continue alongside Buck?
Although his next contract remains unresolved, Aikman has made clear that separating from Buck isn't necessarily his preferred outcome.
During an appearance on the Sports Media with Richard Deitsch podcast, he admitted expecting negotiations to be completed before the season began.
"I thought something would be done prior to the start of this season," Aikman explained.
"I've never gone into a last year of a contract ever since I signed with the Dallas Cowboys. So I thought that it would be done. It's not."
When asked about the importance of maintaining his partnership with Buck , Aikman offered an unequivocal response.
"Would I like to continue working with Joe Buck moving down the road? 100 percent," Aikman added.
The pair began working together at Fox in 2002 before joining ESPN in 2022, establishing the longest-running NFL commentary partnership in league history.
Their reunion on Monday provided no definitive evidence of an ongoing dispute, but with Aikman's future still undecided, speculation surrounding the broadcasting duo is unlikely to disappear.
