Following his arrest on July 23 in Wisconsin, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo finds his high-profile broadcasting career on indefinite pause just weeks before the kickoff of the regular season.

The 46-year-old analyst, who accumulated 34,183 passing yards and 248 touchdowns during his 14-year NFL career, was placed on administrative leave by network executives on July 31. While Romo is on leave, he has been replaced on CBS' top broadcasting team by former NFL superstar JJ. Watt , who will now team up with the legendary play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson .

Tony Romo Faces Legal Citations

The legal troubles surrounding the lead commentator intensified on Thursday evening when court filings confirmed three formal citations stemming from the traffic stop .

Local authorities cited Romo with a first-offense operating while intoxicated (OWI) , an illegal passing maneuver on the right side of the roadway, and carrying open intoxicants inside his vehicle .

With an official court hearing set for September 21, the legal procedure guarantees that Romo will remain out of the booth through at least the first three weeks of the campaign.

Addressing the latest developments, a representative for Romo released a statement emphasizing accountability: " Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved. We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close, and we are communicating with CBS about next steps."

Despite that outreach, CBS Sports President David Berson publicly affirmed that the network has established no timetable for his potential return, keeping the analyst sidelined indefinitely while leadership monitors the proceedings.

This extended absence has led numerous sports media insiders to suggest that Romo may never reclaim his position on CBS's primary broadcast team .

The stakes are immense, given the historic contract Romo inked back in 2020, a 10-year, $180 million agreement that still holds $72 million in remaining compensation.

With network executives evaluating their long-term options and Watt stepping into the spotlight alongside Nantz, Romo's once-unshakable standing as the crown jewel of NFL color commentary hangs in serious jeopardy.
