Tyreek Hill could miss out on millions in 2026 as injury and legal questions stall his NFL return

Miami released the receiver before key contract guarantees kicked in, and the obstacles to a comeback have grown since

T yreek Hill’s 2026 contract listed a $29.9 million base salary , but that figure was never guaranteed. The Miami Dolphins released him on Feb. 16 after he failed a physical, before $11 million in salary would have become fully guaranteed. So while Hill could miss out on millions by remaining unsigned, he was not owed the full $29.9 million after Miami cut him.

The cut came after a devastating knee injury ended Hill’s 2025 season. He dislocated his left knee and tore multiple ligaments, including his ACL, against the New York Jets on Sept. 29. He appeared in only four games, finishing with 21 catches for 265 yards and one touchdown.

Why Tyreek Hill is still a free agent

The biggest hurdle is health. Hill said in a July rehabilitation video that he had “no power” in his injured leg and was working to regain his strength after two surgeries. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, later said Hill was continuing rehab and that no deal was imminent. Teams need to see whether the 32-year-old can pass a physical and regain the speed that has defined his game.

Money and timing may also be slowing negotiations. A Spotrac estimate earlier this year projected a hypothetical two-year contract worth about $30 million, or roughly $15 million per season, but that was a market estimate not a confirmed offer.

Hill’s representatives have said he wants the right team, contract and medical situation. A team signing him midway through the season would be weighing that cost against the limited number of games he could play.

Kansas City once looked like a natural landing spot. Hill spent his first six NFL seasons with the Chiefs , won a Super Bowl alongside Patrick Mahomes and remains familiar with Andy Reid’s offense.

The Chiefs reportedly discussed a reunion after injuries hit their receiving corps, but the latest reports suggest they are exploring other options. NFL insider Ian Rapoport said Hill was “not healthy enough” and pointed to “all the off-the-field stuff” as additional concerns.

Those off-field concerns intensified after a Miami jury found Hill liable for two battery claims in a civil case brought by his estranged wife, Lakeeta Vaccaro. The jury rejected eight other claims and awarded Vaccaro $500,000 in compensatory damages, but no punitive damages.

The NFL said the matter remains under review under its personal conduct policy, leaving open the possibility of discipline if Hill signs.

Tyreek has earned about $143.7 million in NFL pay over his career, according to Over the Cap, so his entire fortune is not at stake. But each week without a contract costs him the chance to earn a new NFL salary this season and makes a return harder to arrange.
