Gigaclay?! Packers legend Clay Matthews looks completely unrecognizable in dramatic new viral photos
Clay Matthews has left NFL fans doing a double take after the former Green Bay Packers star was photographed with a dramatically different appearance

Clay Matthews is generating plenty of attention online after new photographs showed the former Green Bay Packers linebacker looking almost unrecognizable compared with the player fans remember dominating NFL offenses.
Matthews , now 40, was recently spotted out while grabbing coffee and groceries, wearing a matching dark green outfit and carrying bags back to his vehicle.
While his imposing physique immediately stood out, it was his face that appeared to have undergone the biggest transformation.
The former linebacker was still sporting his trademark long hair, which he wore pulled back into a bun. That familiar feature helped provide at least one connection to the player who became one of the most recognizable defensive stars of his generation.
Beyond the hair, however, Matthews looked markedly different from his playing days.
The photographs prompted speculation about whether the former NFL star had undergone some kind of cosmetic procedure, although there is no confirmation that he has had any work done. The reason for the change in his appearance remains unclear.
What is considerably easier to recognize is Matthews ' imposing build.
Even years after his playing career ended, the former pass rusher still appears to possess the physique of someone who could line up across from an offensive tackle on Sunday. His arms, shoulders and legs looked particularly muscular as he carried his groceries to his car.
That immediately brought back memories of the linebacker who spent a decade terrorizing quarterbacks in Green Bay.
From Packers superstar to one of the franchise's all-time greats
Matthews entered the NFL as the 26th overall pick in the 2009 draft and made an immediate impact with Green Bay .
He recorded 10 sacks as a rookie, earned a Pro Bowl selection and quickly established himself as one of the most dangerous members of the Packers' defense.
His second season was even more impressive. Matthews registered 13.5 sacks in 2010, finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting and played a major role in Green Bay's run to Super Bowl XLV.
The Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in that game, giving Matthews the championship that became one of the defining achievements of his career.
He also made one of the most memorable defensive plays of the postseason when his pressure contributed to a crucial fourth-quarter fumble by Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall .
Green Bay eventually became the defining chapter of Matthews ' career. He spent 10 seasons with the Packers, making six Pro Bowls and establishing himself as the franchise's all-time sack leader since sacks became an official statistic in 1982, with 83.5. The Packers also inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2024.
Matthews ultimately finished his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. Across 156 regular-season games, he recorded 91.5 sacks, placing him among the NFL's most productive pass rushers since sacks became an official statistic.
His final NFL season came at age 33, meaning he has now been away from the league for several years. Yet the physical presence that made him such a distinctive player clearly has not disappeared.
Matthews has remained connected to the Packers since retirement and continues to be remembered as one of the central figures of the team's successful era under former head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers .
In 2026, Matthews was again among the nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, although his candidacy ultimately remains separate from his established status in Green Bay.
For longtime NFL fans, however, the latest images are less about Matthews' résumé and more about just how much his appearance has changed.
The long hair is still there. The linebacker-sized frame is still there. But the face underneath that famous hairstyle has clearly changed enough to make social media users look twice.
And while fans can debate exactly what is behind the transformation, one thing appears certain: Matthews may be retired from football, but he has not exactly lost the ability to turn heads.
