Packers in deep trouble: Bad news for Micah Parsons, while Josh Jacobs becomes serious problem

Green Bay ruled Parsons out for at least four games, leaving its pass rush without biggest star

The Green Bay Packers no longer have to wonder whether Micah Parsons might make a surprise return early in the season. Their star pass rusher is officially out for at least the opening month.

Green Bay moved Parsons to the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list, a roster designation that guarantees he will miss the first four games of the 2026 campaign while continuing his recovery from a torn ACL.

The decision had been increasingly expected, but it still represents a significant blow for a defense built around Parsons ’ ability to pressure quarterbacks and change games from the edge.

Parsons has been realistic throughout his rehabilitation and has resisted attaching himself too firmly to a return date, even with Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys emerging as a popular target.

“I think the people really want Week 6, I just want to come back when I'm feeling like myself again,” Parsons said. “I say Week 6 would be optimistic.”

The possibility of facing his former team naturally adds intrigue, but Parsons has made clear that sentiment won't dictate his recovery.

Week 6 may still be too soon

Parsons said the real benchmark will be how he feels once he is cleared to practice again.

“The [21-day practice] window opens the first week of October, two, three weeks of practice, but the reality is you gotta feel like yourself, you gotta be moving again,” he said.

“I don't wanna go out there and embarrass myself. That's a real feeling. Packer nation, just know, when I come back, it's going to be up.”

That approach reflects the stakes involved for both player and team. Green Bay didn't acquire Parsons as a short-term addition. He's expected to be one of the defining players on the roster and a central part of the defense for years to come.

Rushing him back for one marquee matchup would make little sense if it jeopardized his explosiveness or increased the risk of another setback.

Green Bay has to survive without best pass rusher

Parsons ’ absence leaves the Packers with a much more difficult challenge up front.

Lukas Van Ness will be asked to shoulder a larger role, while veteran Javon Hargrave becomes even more important as Green Bay looks for ways to replace the pressure Parsons normally creates.

There's no true substitute for a player of his caliber, so the solution will have to be collective.

The timing is also awkward because Green Bay is dealing with additional uncertainty elsewhere on the roster, including running back Josh Jacobs being placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List .

That puts immediate pressure on the Packers to navigate the opening weeks without two of their biggest names potentially available. The good news is that Parsons hasn't suffered a new setback. The bad news is that the waiting period is now official.

At minimum, Green Bay will play four games without him. Anything beyond that will depend on whether Parsons feels like himself again, and by his own admission, Week 6 remains more hope than guarantee.
