C. J. Stroud and the Texans are at odds over the player's demand for a $70,000,000 contract

Stroud’s $70 million contract hopes create high-stakes dilemma for Texans

C.J. Stroud’s future with the Houston Texans has emerged as one of the NFL’s most intriguing contract storylines, with the two sides reportedly discussing an extension while remaining far apart on a potential agreement.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter provided an update Thursday, revealing that Houston has held discussions with its starting quarterback about a new deal.

However, Schefter indicated that the negotiations aren’t close to completion and could continue into the regular season.

"The Houston Texans have had discussions with CJ Stroud about a new deal. My understanding is they’re not close at this particular time. Talks will continue. We’ll see if they’re able to get anything done by the time the season begins, or shortly thereafter,” Schefter said on NFL Live.

The timing could be crucial for both sides. Stroud remains under contract through 2027 after the Texans exercised his fifth-year option earlier this year. That gives Houston significant control over his future while also providing the team with time to evaluate whether he’s worthy of a massive long-term commitment.

Waiting could carry its own risks for Stroud . If he produces a spectacular 2026 campaign, his value could rise considerably, particularly with several other young quarterbacks expected to enter extension negotiations following the season.

The reported $70 million annual figure surrounding Stroud would put him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in league history. However, there hasn’t been official confirmation that this is a firm demand from Stroud or his representatives.

Texans must decide how much C.J. Stroud is worth

Houston has plenty to consider before committing that kind of money. Stroud won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 after leading the Texans to the playoffs and quickly establishing himself as the franchise’s quarterback. Since then, however, his performance has been less consistent.

His struggles were particularly evident during Houston’s playoff defeat last season, when he threw five interceptions and lost two fumbles across two postseason starts.

Those performances have contributed to questions about whether he’s still on track to become the elite quarterback many expected him to be after his remarkable rookie campaign.

At the same time, the Texans haven’t indicated that they’ve given up on Stroud . Team owner Cal McNair has publicly expressed his commitment to the quarterback, while the organization continues to work toward finding a long-term solution.

Houston has also demonstrated that it’s prepared to reward its young stars. The Texans recently signed defensive end Will Anderson Jr., who was selected one pick after Stroud in the 2023 draft, to a three-year extension worth $150 million. That deal reportedly made Anderson the highest-paid defensive end in NFL history.

That could add another layer of pressure to Stroud’s situation. As teammate after teammate secures long-term financial security, questions about when the Texans will do the same for their quarterback will likely become louder.

The decision ultimately comes down to risk for Houston. If Stroud thrives in 2026, waiting could make his next contract dramatically more expensive. If he struggles again, the Texans may feel justified in delaying or reconsidering a massive commitment.
