Colts target Peyton Manning for front office role after firing Ballard

Indianapolis could explore offering its legendary quarterback a general manager position and minority ownership stake

The Indianapolis Colts have reached a crossroads following a disappointing start to the 2026 NFL season, and an unexpected proposal could bring one of the franchise's greatest players back into the organization.

After firing general manager Chris Ballard following a 2-4 start, Indianapolis is reportedly considering whether Peyton Manning would be interested in taking over its football operations.

The possibility emerged Monday when broadcaster Dan Patrick suggested the Colts could approach their former quarterback about becoming general manager, potentially combining the position with a minority ownership stake.

Such an arrangement would represent a significant departure from the traditional NFL front office structure, particularly given Manning's successful broadcasting career since his retirement.

Patrick revealed the possibility during Monday's edition of The Dan Patrick Show, citing a source familiar with the situation.

"The Colts' first call will be/has been Peyton Manning," Patrick said.

"The call will not only get names and suggestions, but the call will explore whether or not Peyton would be interested in being a general manager for the Colts as the entry point that would include ownership interest in the Colts."

The reported proposal comes during a period of transition for the franchise following the death of longtime owner Jim Irsay in May 2025.

His daughters, including current Colts CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon , have assumed leadership responsibilities, creating the possibility of a different approach to major organizational decisions.

Patrick suggested the new ownership structure could be more receptive to offering a minority stake than Jim Irsay had been.

However, there has been no official confirmation that Indianapolis has offered Manning a position or that he would consider accepting one.

Colts ownership explains Ballard decision

The decision to fire Ballard after just six games underlined the organization's frustration with its disappointing start.

Rather than wait until the offseason, Irsay-Gordon insisted that beginning the search immediately would give Indianapolis more time to identify its next leader.

"Making this change during the season was a deliberate decision," she said in a statement. "Waiting would only delay the important work that needs to begin now.

"We will conduct a thorough search for our next general manager and take the time necessary to identify the right leader for the future of this organization."

Despite the significant front office shake-up, Irsay-Gordon emphasized that the Colts weren't abandoning their ambitions for the remainder of the season.

"I also want to be clear: this decision does not change our goals for the season. We have a lot of football in front of us, and I expect us to compete, improve, and win football games," Irsay-Gordon added.

Could Peyton Manning leave ESPN for Colts?

Manning remains one of the most influential figures in Colts history, having led Indianapolis to victory in Super Bowl XLI and established numerous franchise passing records.

Since retiring in 2016, he has developed a successful television career, including ESPN's popular ManningCast alongside his brother Eli Manning .

However, Manning has never worked as an NFL general manager, making any transition into personnel decisions and roster construction a substantial professional challenge.

An ownership stake could make the opportunity more attractive, although any potential arrangement would require further negotiations and appropriate approvals.

His connection to Indianapolis ensures the suggestion will attract attention, but whether the franchise's most celebrated quarterback returns in a leadership role remains uncertain.
