NFL fans call for Shane Steichen's firing after Colts coach makes Daniel Jones decision

The decision to stick with Jones follows several weeks of disappointing performances from the veteran quarterback

I ndianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen is facing mounting criticism from NFL fans after reaffirming his commitment to Daniel Jones despite the quarterback's continued struggles and the team's latest embarrassing defeat. The Colts were routed 42-7 by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, falling to 2-6 after losing four consecutive games.

Jones was eventually benched in the fourth quarter, giving backup Anthony Richardson his first regular-season action of the 2026 campaign. Yet, after reviewing the game, Steichen decided Jones would remain Indianapolis' starting quarterback for Week 9. The announcement has reignited an increasingly heated debate among Colts supporters , with some questioning the coach's judgment and others demanding that the franchise make a change at quarterback.

Comments describing Steichen's decision as an "idiot" move and calling for him to be fired reflect the anger surrounding a team that has struggled to meet expectations. The criticism also raises a larger question: how much longer can Steichen continue backing Jones when the results have deteriorated so dramatically?

Why are NFL fans furious with Shane Steichen?

Steichen's decision to stick with Jones follows several weeks of disappointing performances from the veteran quarterback. Jones entered the 2026 season hoping to build on an encouraging 2025 campaign that ended prematurely because of a torn Achilles tendon. Indianapolis subsequently committed to him with a two-year, $88 million extension, signaling its confidence that he could remain the team's answer at quarterback.

That investment has not translated into consistent production this season. Through eight games, Jones has thrown five touchdown passes and nine interceptions while completing approximately 60.4% of his attempts. His performances have contributed to Indianapolis' four-game losing streak, and the defeat against Jacksonville represented another low point.

Jones completed 19 of 28 passes for 144 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Jaguars. One of those interceptions was returned for a touchdown, further compounding the damage in a game Indianapolis ultimately lost by 35 points.

After the defeat, Steichen initially said he would evaluate every position, leaving the possibility of a quarterback change open. On Monday, however, he confirmed that Jones would retain the starting job. "I feel that Daniel gives us the best chance to win right now," the head coach said, according to reporting by NBC Sports.

Steichen has repeatedly expressed confidence in Jones' preparation

That stance has frustrated fans who believe the Colts have little left to lose by giving Richardson an extended opportunity. The backlash is not solely about Jones throwing interceptions or struggling to move the offense. It is also about the apparent disconnect between Indianapolis' results and its coach's continued confidence in the quarterback.

Another poor performance should have been enough to trigger a change. Instead, Steichen has chosen continuity at a time when the franchise is already confronting serious questions about its future. Richardson's presence on the roster has made the quarterback controversy even more complicated.

The fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Richardson possesses a combination of arm strength and running ability that could give Indianapolis a different offensive dimension. However, injuries and inconsistency have interrupted his development, and he had not appeared in a regular-season game during the 2026 campaign before Sunday's blowout.

Richardson entered against Jacksonville after Jones was removed from the game. He completed both of his pass attempts for eight yards and added a short run, although his limited playing time offered little opportunity to determine whether he could provide a meaningful improvement.

Steichen has repeatedly expressed confidence in Jones' preparation, command of the offense and ability to make the necessary adjustments. The coach's argument is that Jones remains the most prepared option to lead the offense, even if his production has fallen short of expectations. But that reasoning has become increasingly difficult for frustrated supporters to accept as the losses accumulate.

Richardson has his own questions to answer, particularly regarding his passing accuracy and decision-making. Nevertheless, fans arguing for a change believe he deserves a genuine opportunity to start rather than being limited to late-game appearances when the outcome is already decided.
