Quinn Ewers fails to convince Dolphins and joins Jaguars alongside Travis Hunter for fresh start
Jacksonville has taken a chance on the former Texas quarterback after Miami decided to move on.

Quinn Ewers is getting another opportunity to change the direction of his NFL career after the Miami Dolphins traded the former Texas star to the Jacksonville Jaguars .
Jacksonville sent Miami a sixth-round pick in the 2028 NFL Draft for Ewers , who now joins an offense featuring Trevor Lawrence and Travis Hunter .
The move comes after Ewers struggled to secure his place in Miami’s plans following an uneven preseason and a groin injury.
“Yeah, I think so. Quinn really hasn’t been able to go very much,” Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said when asked earlier in the week whether the backup quarterback competition was still open.
Dolphins move on from Quinn Ewers
Ewers had shown promise late in the 2025 season after replacing Tua Tagovailoa as Miami’s starter.
He appeared in four games and made three starts, completing 55 of 83 passes for 622 yards and three touchdowns.
But his 2026 preseason got off to a difficult start.
Ewers completed just one of eight passes for 27 yards and an interception against Washington before a groin injury prevented him from playing in Miami’s next two preseason games.
Reports subsequently suggested there were differing opinions inside the Dolphins organization over whether he should remain on the roster.
“There were mixed views internally about keeping him. There was sentiment in front office for a different no. 2,” Miami Herald reporter Barry Jackson wrote.
Jaguars give Ewers another opportunity
Jacksonville had been searching for more depth behind Lawrence and ultimately decided Ewers was worth the investment.
“The Jaguars have been quietly calling around on backup QBs and land one with Ewers, who has starting experience,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.
Ewers now enters a quarterback room that also includes Nick Mullens, Carter Bradley and Joey Aguilar , although the trade could lead to further roster changes before the season begins.
His arrival also places him on the same roster as Hunter , giving Jacksonville another young player with significant college pedigree.
Ewers was originally selected 231st overall by Miami in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft after leading Texas to consecutive College Football Playoff semifinal appearances.
Now, after only one season with the Dolphins , Jacksonville offers him a fresh chance to prove that his brief spell as an NFL starter wasn't the ceiling of his professional career.
