There was little to worry about for the Kansas City Chiefs after their dominant 31-10 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 1 of the NFL season.

Andy Reid ’s team showed strength on both sides of the ball in its season opener, but one of the biggest reasons for optimism was the immediate impact from its rookie class. The early returns from the Chiefs’ 2026 NFL Draft class have been extremely encouraging.

Andy Reid sends warning to his rookies

Although Reid was pleased with the performance of his young players against Denver, he knows the real challenge is just beginning. During his Wednesday press conference, as the Chiefs began preparing for their Week 2 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts , the coach reminded his rookies that opposing teams now have plenty of film to study them.

“Brett (Veach) did a nice job of bringing the guys in and drafting them,” Reid said of his rookies. “It was good to see. The thing I mentioned to them, there’s tape out there now. Whatever hiccups you had, you got to fix those. You know these other coaches are pretty creative people, and the players study you.”

The next step for Kansas City’s rookies will be responding to the adjustments made by the rest of the league. The ease with which they made an impact against the Broncos does not guarantee the same results moving forward, especially when they face defenses that already know their strengths and weaknesses.

Chiefs’ rookies generating excitement

During the offseason, Kansas City focused on a youth movement, particularly on defense. Cornerback Mansoor Delane and defensive linemen R. Mason Thomas and Peter Woods have emerged as players with the potential to become long-term pillars of the unit.

Delane enjoyed a dream debut before suffering a shoulder injury, intercepting Bo Nix on Denver’s opening drive and showing why the Chiefs are so high on him.

Thomas also made an immediate impact, finishing his first game with two tackles, two quarterback pressures, and a sack, while Woods contributed two tackles, one quarterback pressure, and a pass defended.

On offense, running back Emmett Johnson made the most of his opportunities as the backup to Kenneth Walker III . The rookie finished the game with eight carries for 24 yards and added two receptions for 44 yards .

With a new generation beginning to emerge, the Chiefs appear to have found important pieces to help support Patrick Mahomes for years to come.
