Chiefs dodge major disaster following game-day injury scare with Mansoor Delane
The Chiefs thought they found their next defensive star… until his dream debut turned into an injury scare that could change Kansas City’s plans.

M ansoor Delane had a debut of highs and lows with the Kansas City Chiefs . The rookie cornerback experienced a dream moment when he recorded the first interception of his NFL career, but the celebration was short-lived. Minutes later, he left the game with a shoulder injury that immediately raised concerns within the organization.
The play came on the third snap of the matchup against the Denver Broncos , when Delane intercepted quarterback Bo Nix for his first major highlight as a professional. However, after making the tackle, he landed hard on his right shoulder, forcing him out of the game, according to Josh Alper of NBC Sports.
The cornerback did not return after heading to the locker room during Denver’s second offensive possession. Despite his absence, Kansas City rolled to a convincing 31-10 victory .
Chiefs hoping for positive news on Mansoor Delane’s shoulder injury
The injury creates concern for a Kansas City defense that revamped its cornerback group during the offseason. If Delane is forced to miss multiple games, veteran L’Jarius Sneed could become the primary replacement after returning to the Chiefs in June following two seasons with the Tennessee Titans .
The initial reports provided some optimism. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Chiefs scheduled an MRI for Tuesday after X-rays taken the night of the game did not reveal any significant damage.
Garafolo noted that the team remains hopeful Delane suffered only a sprain, especially considering his previous issues in the same area.
Meanwhile, Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network that both the X-rays and CT scan came back negative.
“He made the interception, landed on that shoulder, and actually suffered an injury earlier in the spring and summer on that scapula — landed right on that. He’s had some tests. X-ray negative — that is a good sign. CT scan negative. Not out of the woods yet, but there’s a lot of positivity that this is a short-term injury,” Rapoport said.
The reporter added that the expectation around the Chiefs is that Delane could miss minimal time.
This is not the first time in 2026 that the rookie’s shoulder has limited him. During much of spring practices, he worked in a non-contact jersey after suffering an injury to the same area during organized team activities (OTAs), and he was not cleared for full contact until the final weeks of training camp.
From LSU star to key piece of Kansas City’s future
The Chiefs made a major investment in Delane during the 2026 NFL Draft. Kansas City traded up from the No. 9 pick to No. 6 overall to select the LSU cornerback , a move that came after sending Trent McDuffie to the Rams and losing Jaylen Watson in free agency, according to Pro Football Rumors .
The organization viewed Delane as the top cornerback prospect in the draft class.
After three seasons at Virginia Tech , Delane transferred to LSU in 2025 and turned his lone season with the Tigers into a standout campaign. He was named a unanimous All-American after recording 45 tackles, two interceptions and 11 passes defended, while finishing second in the SEC in that category.
The Maryland native played high school football at Archbishop Spalding before joining Virginia Tech. He finished his college career with 191 tackles, eight interceptions and 27 passes defended across 44 games.
