Patrick Mahomes has once again shown that his impact in Kansas City goes far beyond what he does on the field.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback recently reached out to Tucker D. Franklin , a prominent Chiefs reporter and podcast personality, following the sudden death of Franklin’s father, Doug , on August 31 at just 55 years old.

Franklin shared the heartbreaking news on X, posting photographs of himself with his father and reflecting on the life they shared. He described Doug as a great father, phenomenal husband and amazing man, while admitting that he was devastated by a loss that came far sooner than anyone expected.

“Life is not fair,” Franklin wrote, while choosing to focus on being grateful for the 28 years he had with his father.

The sports media community quickly rallied around Franklin . But among the many messages of support, one came from the biggest name imaginable in Kansas City sports.

Mahomes privately contacted Franklin to offer his condolences, sending a short message that carried considerable weight during such a painful moment.

“Praying for your family, man. Chiefs and ChiefsKingdom is with you!” Mahomes wrote.

Franklin responded by thanking the quarterback for reaching out, explaining that the gesture meant more than Mahomes would know. Mahomes then reacted to Franklin’s reply, adding another personal touch to the exchange.

The interaction offered a powerful reminder that the person behind the Chiefs’ superstar quarterback is someone who genuinely cares about the people around him.

He later shared the exchange publicly, writing that fans can sometimes wonder whether the quarterback of their favorite team is actually a good person away from the spotlight. In Kansas City, Franklin said, there’s no need to wonder about Mahomes.

Doug Franklin leaves behind a remarkable legacy

Doug Franklin’s life was defined by service to others. He was a pastor, teacher, firefighter, chaplain and EMT who spent decades helping his community in different ways.

His pastoral journey began in 2001 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, and he later served at several other Missouri churches. He also spent years with the Trenton Fire Department and Grundy County Rural Fire Protection District, where he eventually became a lieutenant and training officer.

Outside his professional responsibilities, Doug was deeply devoted to his family and his faith. His love of the Kansas City Royals was also passed down to Tucker , helping strengthen the connection between father and son and the city they loved.

Tucker has since built a career around that same passion for Kansas City sports. He works across KC Sports Network’s podcast and digital-content lineup and has become a familiar voice among Chiefs fans.

Mahomes ’ message was particularly meaningful because it came while he was preparing for the Chiefs’ season opener and working his way back from a serious knee injury. Even with football demanding his attention, he took a moment to stand beside someone going through an unimaginable loss.
