Chris Jones' lingering issue could hurt Patrick Mahomes' plans for Week 3

Kansas City could be without a key defensive presence as Chris Jones continues to deal with a calf issue

The Kansas City Chiefs enter their Week 3 meeting with the Miami Dolphins carrying a few injury concerns, with Chris Jones' continued limitations standing out as one of the biggest.

Kansas City is 2-0 and will look to maintain its perfect start in Miami, but the status of several defensive players could affect how the game unfolds.

Jones has been dealing with a calf injury since Week 1 and remained a limited participant in practice. The veteran defensive tackle also played through the problem last week, meaning his ability to handle a full workload on Sunday remains something to monitor.

His absence would create a significant challenge for Kansas City. Jones remains one of the most experienced and productive pieces of the Chiefs' defensive front, and losing him could put additional pressure on the rest of the unit.

While the latest reports haven't ruled him out, the recurring limitation suggests the team is still managing the injury carefully.

The Chiefs have encouraging developments elsewhere. Chamarri Conner has returned to limited work after missing time following a training camp collision, while rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane has progressed to full participation.

Jaden Hicks has also been heavily involved, giving Kansas City more options in a secondary that has dealt with injuries.

L'Jarius Sneed, meanwhile, remains limited because of his knee. Kansas City has continued to manage his practice workload, but he's been available on game day. Patrick Mahomes has also been able to practice fully, providing some positive news for the Chiefs' offense.

Chiefs balancing injuries with Walker's workload

Josh Simmons remains another concern. The left tackle has continued to miss practice because of his back injury and hasn't been able to reclaim his expected starting role. That leaves Kansas City relying on its replacement while Simmons ' return timetable remains uncertain.

The Chiefs are also planning to manage Kenneth Walker III's workload. Walker has been a major part of the team's 2-0 start, producing significant all-purpose yardage while handling a heavy number of touches.

Kansas City doesn't want to take him out of the offensive equation, but the coaching staff wants to give rookie Emmett Johnson more opportunities.

That approach could help preserve Walker's effectiveness as the season progresses while allowing Johnson to develop. The rookie has already shown enough to earn additional opportunities, giving the Chiefs another option for keeping their running game productive without relying exclusively on Walker .

The central concern for the Chiefs heading into Miami is whether Kansas City can keep its key players healthy. Jones ' calf remains the biggest defensive question, while Simmons ' absence continues to affect the offensive line.

With the Chiefs chasing a third straight victory, Sunday's matchup should provide another indication of how well they can manage those lingering issues.
