Mecole Hardman Jr. has gone from Super Bowl hero to an NFL free agent, with the former Kansas City Chiefs star now facing an uncertain future just days before the 2026 season begins.

The Buffalo Bills released Hardman on Saturday as they continued trimming their roster ahead of the NFL's 53-man deadline. The move brings an abrupt end to his brief spell in Buffalo and leaves the 28-year-old searching for another opportunity.

Hardman's career reached one of its biggest highs in February 2024, when he caught Patrick Mahomes' overtime touchdown pass against the San Francisco 49ers to seal Super Bowl LVIII for Kansas City.

The dramatic score earned Hardman his third Super Bowl championship and produced an unforgettable celebration.

Taylor Swift, watching from the stands as Travis Kelce's partner, made her way onto the field and embraced Hardman after the victory, telling him she was happy for the team.

The connection between Hardman and Swift wasn't limited to that extraordinary night. Hardman previously recalled meeting the pop superstar and performing card tricks for her.

Swift's reaction was reportedly that his magic was “crazy,” a story that became one of the more unusual anecdotes surrounding the Chiefs' famous inner circle.

Hardman's fiancée, Chariah Gordon, also became friendly with Swift during their time around the Chiefs. Gordon has spoken warmly about Swift and described her as kind, fun and genuine.

The two were regularly seen together during Kansas City's championship run, giving Hardman another unexpected link to one of the world's biggest entertainers.

Hardman's NFL future now hangs in the balance

While Hardman's profile grew off the field, his playing career has taken a difficult turn since that Super Bowl triumph.

He returned to Kansas City on a one-year contract after his championship-winning performance but suffered a season-ending knee injury later in 2024. He then moved to the Green Bay Packers in 2025, although he couldn't secure a place on their active roster.

Buffalo offered him another chance. Hardman joined the Bills' practice squad in November 2025 and was later elevated to the active roster. He subsequently returned on a reserve/futures contract in January 2026, hoping his experience as a receiver and return specialist would help him win a roster spot.

He showed some promise during this year's preseason, catching four passes for 20 yards and a touchdown over three games. He also handled return duties, recording three kickoff returns for 80 yards and four punt returns for 50 yards.

That production ultimately wasn't enough. Ray Davis emerged as a preferred option in the return game, while Buffalo faced difficult decisions as it reduced its roster.

Hardman is now available to sign with another team, giving him one more chance to extend a career that once included a Super Bowl-winning play and a memorable celebration with Swift .
