Patrick Mahomes is used to facing aggressive defenses, but the opponent attacking his family’s backyard might be the one he can’t beat. A group of eagles has been repeatedly pecking at the grass on the football field installed at their Kansas City-area home, and Brittany Mahomes is documenting the damage.

In a series of posts on her Instagram Stories, Brittany showed the birds scattered across the field, pecking at the turf and leaving visible marks behind. The mess didn’t stop at the playing surface. “They also destroyed all our blow-ups,” Brittany wrote, adding a smiling emoji that seemed to express frustration rather than amusement.

The Eagles keep coming back

The eagles first appeared around July , according to Brittany. By August, she thought they had left for good. “But sadly they left,” she wrote at the time. “I think they had their babies and now they’re gone they come back for mating season, maybe, I don’t know.” Her prediction turned out to be accurate: the birds returned, and this time they brought more damage.

For Mahomes , who spends his Sundays reading NFL defenses, this is a different kind of problem: no game plan, no blitz pickup, and no way to stop the birds from winning. While he prepares for another season with the Chiefs, Brittany is left to deal with the aftermath, one peck at a time. The backyard may be built for football, but right now, it belongs to the eagles.

For Mahomes, this is a different kind of problem than the ones he faces every Sunday. On the field, he knows how to read defenses and find solutions. In his own backyard, there is no play that works. Brittany is the one dealing with the mess while he gets ready for another season with the Chiefs. The football field is there for training, but for now, it belongs to the birds.

The Chiefs open their 2026 season on Monday, September 14, against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday Night Football. It is a chance for Kansas City to bounce back after a disappointing 6-11 season in 2025, when Mahomes missed time with a season-ending knee injury.

Mahomes finished last year with 3,587 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions below his usual standard. He already holds the Chiefs' franchise records with 35,939 passing yards and 267 touchdown passes, and he enters 2026 with something to prove.
