Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs could target surprise addition before trade deadline

Kansas City may have a much different plan in mind than the blockbuster names fans are dreaming about

Patrick Mahomes could soon have another weapon at his disposal, but Kansas City’s answer to its wide receiver concerns may be far less spectacular than the names circulating online.

The Chiefs have become familiar with trade deadline drama, yet their front office has generally preferred calculated additions over blockbuster gambles.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano projected on Oct. 2 that Kansas City would add a receiver before the Nov. 10 trade deadline, describing the likely move as an “unexciting” one.

The Chiefs don’t necessarily need another superstar, but they do need dependable depth capable of making timely catches when injuries and a long postseason race begin to take their toll.

Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce have remained central to Mahomes ’ passing attack, but injuries have made additional help more important. Rice left Kansas City’s win over Las Vegas with a hamstring issue, while Tyquan Thornton suffered an ankle injury after a 55-yard reception.

Those setbacks could encourage general manager Brett Veach to explore the market.

Mahomes also doesn’t necessarily need a receiver who’ll command 10 or more targets every week. Someone capable of creating separation, stretching the field or contributing in key third-down situations could make a significant difference as the season progresses.

Kansas City could choose value over headlines

The Chiefs have repeatedly shown that they’re comfortable finding useful pieces without surrendering major assets.

Their previous deadline additions, including Kadarius Toney in 2022 and DeAndre Hopkins in 2024, didn’t arrive with enormous trade packages, yet both showed Kansas City’s willingness to improve its roster without disrupting its long-term plans.

Kenneth Walker III has also changed the equation. His explosive rushing performances have given Kansas City a stronger ground attack, which can make life easier for Mahomes and reduce the need for the quarterback to carry the offense through the air.

That balance could become especially important if injuries continue affecting the receiving corps.

A modest receiver addition could therefore be particularly effective. A reliable veteran who can separate, block and make difficult catches may be more valuable than a flashy name who requires a major investment. Kansas City’s history suggests that Veach understands that distinction.

Brian Thomas Jr. remains an enticing fantasy for Chiefs fans, but Jacksonville has little reason to move a young receiver with considerable upside.

Jaguars general manager James Gladstone has previously pushed back strongly against trade speculation surrounding Thomas , making that blockbuster scenario difficult to envision.

Then there’s Tyreek Hill. Russell Wilson recently argued that Kansas City should at least explore a reunion, while former Chiefs teammate Kyle Long pointed to the chemistry Hill and Mahomes developed together.

Hill’s return from a serious leg injury makes the idea complicated, but his speed could still transform an offense if he’s healthy enough.

The safest expectation is that Kansas City could make a practical receiver trade in order to improve its championship chances.
