Patrick Mahomes' former coach reveals the Chiefs star's retirement plans: "When he wins 10 Super Bowls"

Patrick Mahomes reportedly identified an extraordinary target for ending his NFL career years ago

Patrick Mahomes has already achieved what most NFL quarterbacks can only dream of, winning three Super Bowls and establishing himself among the most successful players of his generation.

However, according to his former quarterback trainer Jeff Christensen , the Chiefs superstar has had an even more ambitious goal in mind since the early stages of his professional career.

Speaking on Fearless with Jason Whitlock , Christensen recalled asking Mahomes when he would consider bringing his playing days to an end. The answer reportedly had nothing to do with money, age or the length of his contract.

"He's just wired different," Christensen said on Fearless with Jason Whitlock . "It's always risky for me to say it, but when I was with Patrick several years ago, when we first started working, I said, 'What's your get out?' … And Patrick said, 'My get out is when I win my 10th Super Bowl.'"

The revelation suggests that Mahomes had already established an extraordinary benchmark for his career long before becoming a three-time Super Bowl champion.

Rather than identifying a particular financial target, he reportedly viewed winning championships as the ultimate measure of success.

Mahomes has previously made his priorities clear publicly. In 2023, he explained his approach to balancing financial rewards with the pursuit of sporting achievements.

"I've always said I'm about legacy and winning rings more than making money at this moment," Mahomes told the media.

That philosophy is particularly striking given the size of his original contract. In 2020, Mahomes signed a 10-year agreement worth up to $450 million, although the deal has since been restructured several times.

Mahomes has always put winning ahead of money

Christensen believes the quarterback's actions have consistently reflected the mentality he displayed early in his career.

"Now, Pat, through all the stuff, his actions have matched his words vehemently," Christensen continued. "He does not care about money. He wants to be the greatest. His action plan is exactly on schedule."

The trainer also recalled telling Mahomes during his rookie season in 2017 that he had "the skill to be the greatest quarterback ever born."

Mahomes spent that first season largely as a backup to Alex Smith , making one start against the Denver Broncos in the regular-season finale.

His opportunity to become Kansas City's franchise quarterback arrived the following year, when he threw for more than 5,000 yards and won the NFL MVP award.

Since then, he has led the Chiefs to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships, including consecutive victories in Super Bowls LVII and LVIII.

Those achievements have placed him firmly in conversations about the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.

His commitment to winning has also been reflected in Kansas City's handling of his contract. The Chiefs have repeatedly restructured the deal to create salary-cap flexibility, allowing the franchise to manage its finances while continuing to build a competitive roster.

Can Mahomes really reach 10 championships?

The 10-Super Bowl target remains an enormous challenge. Mahomes would need to win seven more championships, surpassing Tom Brady 's record of seven Super Bowl victories.

Even for a quarterback of his ability, achieving that goal would require sustained excellence over many seasons.

The quality of the offensive line, receiving corps, coaching staff and defense will all influence Kansas City's chances, while injuries and competition across the NFL create further obstacles.

Mahomes has nevertheless demonstrated an ability to deliver under pressure. One of his defining performances came during the 2021 postseason, when he helped Kansas City produce a dramatic late drive against the Buffalo Bills before the Chiefs won in overtime.

His individual achievements have also been remarkable. He won both the NFL MVP award and the Super Bowl MVP award in the 2022 season, reinforcing his reputation as one of the league's most dangerous postseason performers.

Despite comparisons with Brady , Mahomes has repeatedly emphasized the importance of collective success rather than personal recognition.

"I care more about the legacy of our team," the quarterback told the media back in 2025, ahead of Super Bowl LIX.

"We've put in so much work and worked so hard that I want to be remembered for the team that we are and the team that we built here in Kansas City. I never really think about my legacy; I think about all the guys that I've played with and how they've kind of left their imprint on this team, and I want us to be remembered for that."

There is no indication that Mahomes intends to retire soon, and Christensen's recollection should not be mistaken for a formal retirement announcement. Instead, it offers an insight into the ambition that has helped drive the quarterback's career.

If his reported target remains unchanged, Mahomes may not consider his work finished until he has achieved something no player has ever accomplished.

Ten Super Bowl victories would be an extraordinary milestone, and whether he ultimately reaches it or not, his pursuit of that goal could keep him competing at the highest level for years to come.
