Patrick Mahomes’ “I have to be a dad too” quote resurfaces as the Chiefs look to bounce back

The quarterback’s reflections on family feel timely as Kansas City tries to recover from back-to-back losses

“Everybody sees the game days,” Patrick Mahomes said in Netflix’s Quarterback. What fans don’t see, he explained, is the day-to-day work of balancing football with life as a father and husband. “I have to be a dad too. I have to be a husband.” The comments have resurfaced as the Kansas City Chiefs look to steady their season.

They are not from a new interview. But they offer a personal glimpse of the life he shares with his wife, Brittany, and their three children, Sterling, Bronze and Golden , beyond the pressure of Sundays and the chase for another Super Bowl.

Family life beyond the Chiefs’ latest losses

The timing gives Mahomes’ words new resonance. Kansas City opened the season 5-0 , then lost 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks and 28-24 to the Denver Broncos in consecutive weeks.

The loss in Denver was especially painful: the Chiefs led by 11 in the fourth quarter and reached the Broncos’ 1-yard line late, but came away without the go-ahead score.

After the Denver game, Mahomes didn’t hide from the stakes. “Now, you’re kind of in a dogfight for the division,” he said, adding that the team had to take it one week at a time.

For a quarterback carrying the hopes of a franchise, those words show the weight of the job; his earlier comments also remind fans that football is only one part of his life.

The Chiefs’ next chance to respond comes Sunday, Nov. 8, at home against the New York Jets . Kickoff is at noon CT (1 p.m. ET) on CBS and Paramount+.
