Patrick Mahomes has spent much of his adult life under the brightest spotlight in American sports, but a recent story from his childhood offered a surprisingly personal glimpse into the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback behind the superstar image.

With Kansas City preparing for its Week 2 meeting with the Indianapolis Colts, Mahomes appeared on 96.5 The Fan with Carrington Harrison and found himself reminiscing about an era long before NFL success and the enormous attention that now surrounds him.

The conversation turned to ringtones, prompting Mahomes to recall his fascination with Motorola Razr phones as a youngster. He admitted he had accumulated plenty of ringtones and eventually got into trouble with his mother, Randi Mahomes , after spending too much money on them.

“I had a lot of them,” said Mahomes . “I can’t even rememeber which ones, but I mean that was like the thing back in the day.

“You had the Razr phone, and you’d get all the ringtones and stuff like that. And I forgot how much they were, but my mom got mad at me one time for buying too many ringtones. I remember that and being in trouble for that.”

The story might sound lighthearted, but it offered a rare reminder of how different Mahomes ' life once looked.

From childhood memories to an NFL comeback

Mahomes ' latest reflections also come as he continues adjusting to life after a major knee injury. After tearing his ACL and LCL in December, he returned to action in Kansas City's season opener against Denver and helped the Chiefs secure a 31-10 victory.

The quarterback completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for 23 yards and scored on a 15-yard touchdown, providing an early indication that his mobility had returned despite the long recovery process.

However, Mahomes acknowledged that there was still work to do in the Chiefs' passing game. His numbers weren't at the level fans have become accustomed to seeing from the three-time Super Bowl MVP, and Kansas City relied heavily on its running game during the victory.

Speaking after the opener, he explained that his surgically repaired leg was “the least of my worries,” noting that other parts of his body were sore because he hadn't played football for so long.

“Yeah, I feel normal,” Mahomes said. “Actually, I mean, it’s like a blessing and curse. You get sore everywhere else because you haven’t played football in so long. And so, the leg is like the least of my worries right now.

“So, I’m just excited to be out there and playing. At the end of the day, you don’t know until you get out there and play, and I was able to go out there and play, and I feel good today.”

Now, with the Colts awaiting Kansas City in Week 2, Mahomes is preparing for another important step in his comeback.
