Patrick Mahomes' multi-million-dollar investment in Kansas City Royals includes additional $5 million earmarked for the homeless

MLB franchise is backing a homelessness initiative as part of a much larger community package

Patrick Mahomes ’ connection to Kansas City has long extended beyond football, but one of his most prominent investments is now taking on a bigger role in the city’s community development plans.

The Kansas City Royals , whose ownership group Mahomes joined in 2020, have committed $5 million to the city’s Housing Gateway Program as part of a broader agreement connected to a proposed $1.9 billion stadium project at Crown Center.

The contribution is one piece of a larger package that would require the Royals to provide at least $55 million in community benefits over the life of a 30-year lease.

Royals president Brooks Sherman said the team wanted to identify projects where the money could have a direct impact.

“Five-million-dollar contributions for the city’s Housing Gateway Program and its efforts to fund solutions to homelessness,” Sherman said. “We believe we selected meaningful projects and scopes to best put these funds to use on behalf of the city…”

$5 million could have wider effect

The value of the commitment may extend beyond the money itself. Josh Henges , Kansas City’s chief impact officer for Homeless Solutions, said the Royals ’ involvement could help attract additional investment to the program.

“It’s gonna get easier,” Henges said. “The more investors you have and the amount of investment they bring in to include the name of the Royals. To us what that signals, yes the money’s gonna do amazing things, it’s gonna bring in more investment.

"That’s what I see this five million dollars as… It shows that this innovation is something that’s catching people’s attention…”

Mahomes ' place in the Royals ’ ownership group makes the move another notable extension of his influence in Kansas City.

Mahomes’ investment has grown

Mahomes became a minority owner of the Royals on July 28, 2020, joining the group led by chairman and CEO John Sherman .

His exact stake has never been publicly disclosed, but the franchise is now valued at around $1.64 billion, making it one of the most substantial investments tied to the Chiefs quarterback’s expanding business portfolio.

The move also fits with Mahomes ’ broader pattern of community involvement.

His 15 and the Mahomies Foundation has backed literacy programs, youth initiatives and projects supporting homeless and at-risk children across Kansas City.

In 2025, the foundation donated $15,000 to the Kansas City Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, helping fund nearly 6,000 books for local children.

“Reading every day is so important,” Mahomes said at the time. “It helps us grow, learn, and dream big.”

The foundation also donated $15,000 to HALO’s Fresh Start Fund, which helped provide clothing and basic essentials for homeless children moving into new housing.

The Royals ’ latest commitment is much larger, but it follows the same wider theme.

Mahomes remains focused on trying to lead the Chiefs back toward another Super Bowl run, yet his footprint across Kansas City continues to grow in ways that have little to do with what happens on Sundays.
