Patrick Mahomes speaks out and addresses theories that “the Chiefs get all the calls in their favor”

The quarterback joked about the reaction a controversial overtime ruling could have sparked

Patrick Mahomes has heard the jokes, seen the complaints and knows the reputation that follows the Kansas City Chiefs whenever a close officiating call swings their way.

So when replay review overturned what initially looked like a game-ending fumble in Kansas City’s favor during Sunday night’s 33-30 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts , Mahomes couldn't resist addressing it afterward.

“We had the big play in overtime where we think we stripped the ball,” Mahomes told reporters. “I was actually kinda glad, I didn’t want to see Twitter’s reaction if they would’ve called it a fumble.”

It was a revealing moment because Mahomes was acknowledging something Chiefs fans and rivals have debated for years, the perception that Kansas City benefits from favorable officiating in big moments.

Whether that criticism is fair is another question. What is clear is that Mahomes is fully aware of it.

Mahomes’ late-game composure

The officiating discussion came after another game in which Kansas City had to fight its way through adversity. Mahomes completed 32 of 47 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns as the Chiefs improved to 2-0.

Travis Kelce caught nine passes for 101 yards and scored his first touchdown of the season, while Kansas City repeatedly answered after falling behind.

The Chiefs were unable to end the game on the overturned fumble, but Mahomes still found a way to finish the job.

“I mean, I think guys were resilient, and we just strained to finish,” he said. “It wasn't always pretty. There were times we didn't execute at a high level. But guys continued to fight and continued to push and we found a way at the end.”

That has become a familiar theme throughout Mahomes ’ career. Mahomes keeps adding to his reputation in close games Sunday’s win also reinforced just how difficult Kansas City has been to put away with Mahomes at quarterback.

Including the playoffs, he now has 31 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since 2018. He also improved to 8-0 as a starter in overtime games, extending what is already the best undefeated overtime record by a starting quarterback in NFL history.

Those numbers explain why even controversial moments involving the Chiefs draw such intense scrutiny. Kansas City has spent years playing meaningful games, and Mahomes has repeatedly delivered when the margin is thin.

Mahomes understood the moment

Mahomes ’ comment wasn't a complaint about the officials. It was a joke about the reaction he knew would follow if Kansas City had benefited from the ruling.

That self-awareness seemed to land well with fans because it acknowledged the broader conversation without turning it into an argument.

The Chiefs now head to Miami in Week 3 with a chance to move to 3-0. And if another close call goes their way, Mahomes already knows what the internet will say.
