NFL fans have wasted no time questioning the officiating surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs after Patrick Mahomes and his teammates opened the 2026 season with a convincing 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Although Kansas City dominated for much of Monday night's contest, one play during the opening touchdown drive quickly became the center of an online debate.

Mahomes made a successful return from his knee injury, helping guide the Chiefs to a comfortable win in their first game of the campaign. New running back Kenneth Walker III was arguably the biggest star of the night, delivering an explosive debut after joining Kansas City.

Walker finished with 173 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Mahomes contributed through both the air and on the ground.

The Chiefs' defense also played a major role in the victory, forcing turnovers and limiting Denver's offense throughout the evening. However, the discussion away from the final score focused heavily on a perceived missed holding penalty involving Travis Kelce.

The incident occurred during Mahomes ' rushing touchdown. As the quarterback made his way into the end zone, Kelce appeared to grab and restrict a Broncos defender. Several viewers believed the contact was significant enough to warrant a holding penalty, but no flag was thrown.

That immediately fueled accusations on social media that Kansas City continues to benefit from favorable officiating.

Former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe criticized the decision, while television personality Skip Bayless also referenced Kelce's recent wedding when commenting on the missed call. Fans piled on, with some suggesting that officials were once again helping Mahomes and the Chiefs.

One frustrated supporter described the alleged holding as obvious, while another claimed Kansas City gets away with an unusually high number of such penalties.

“The amount of holding they let Chiefs get away with is mind boggling,” wrote one viewer.

Others took a more measured view, arguing that missed calls happen throughout the NFL and aren't evidence of favoritism.

Why Chiefs officiating complaints keep returning

The latest controversy has revived a familiar argument surrounding Kansas City. The Chiefs have repeatedly faced accusations from opposing fans who believe Mahomes receives favorable treatment from officials, particularly during important games.

Similar complaints emerged during Kansas City's playoff meeting with the Houston Texans in January 2025. Some viewers felt penalties involving Mahomes were called too aggressively, leading to renewed speculation that the quarterback and the Chiefs were receiving preferential treatment.

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith even discussed whether Mahomes ' popularity, combined with Kelce's relationship with Taylor Swift , could contribute to the perception that Kansas City receives favorable calls.

It should be noticed there’s no evidence that NFL officials have intentionally manipulated games to help the Chiefs, nor has any investigation established that Kansas City has received special treatment.

Missed penalties are an unavoidable part of football, and the Chiefs aren't the only team to benefit from an official failing to see an infraction.

Kansas City's opening-night performance gives critics plenty to debate, but it also gives the defending AFC contenders legitimate reasons to be optimistic.

Mahomes looked healthy, Walker provided a major offensive boost and the defense controlled Denver. The Chiefs will now turn their attention to the Indianapolis Colts, whom they'll face at home on September 20.
