Taylor Swift and Madonna's extravagant demands during the MTV VMAs revealed
Madonna's photo rules and Taylor's brief VMA appearances revealed

Taylor Swift and Madonna dominated the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, but their influence reportedly extended well beyond the stage, with organizers accommodating a number of backstage preferences.
Madonna , 68, returned to the VMAs for the first time in 23 years and opened the ceremony alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX . The pop icon went on to collect seven awards, including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration with Carpenter for “Bring Your Love.”
Her return was accompanied by strict arrangements concerning her public appearances. According to reports, Madonna declined to pose on the red carpet and wanted only approved photographers to capture images of her performance.
Later, when she arrived at a West Hollywood party, members of her team reportedly used bright torches to make it difficult for paparazzi to photograph her.
Madonna also attracted attention for her glamorous appearance, wearing a corseted outfit and a reported $2 million diamond necklace while accepting her awards.
Swift's approach was different, but equally tightly managed. The singer picked up three prizes, including Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” taking her career total to 33 VMAs and moving her beyond Beyoncé's previous record of 30 wins.
She also received the inaugural Artist Director Honor and used the ceremony to premiere the music video for her new song “Patient Zero,” starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
Two superstars, two very different VMA strategies
Swift reportedly spent only around 15 minutes inside the main auditorium during the ceremony. Her team said she didn't want her presence to distract from other performers, with much of the show instead watched from backstage.
She reportedly waited until the red carpet had closed before posing for photographs shortly before the ceremony began. Swift then entered the auditorium for her special honor and video premiere before leaving again. She returned later in the evening to accept Video of the Year.
Madonna's reported demands focused more heavily on privacy and controlling her image. Her photography arrangements came as she prepared for one of the night's biggest comebacks, having last performed at the VMAs more than two decades earlier.
During her acceptance speech for Best Collaboration, Madonna also revealed that she initially struggled to get a response from Carpenter's team when she proposed working together.
"When five days passed and I still didn't get connected with Sabrina and didn't hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me - five days - I DM'd [direct messaged] her," said Madonna .
"She answered me back and... within weeks we were in the studio together. It was fabulous."
Carpenter offered a light-hearted clarification, insisting that her team does respond, while joking that she personally replies faster.
Madonna's long-awaited return and Swift's record-breaking night ensured both remained central to the event, even when they weren't physically in the auditorium.
