Travis Kelce doesn't want to end up like Tom Brady: The master plan for his retirement and future family with Taylor Swift
Kelce's retirement decision could hinge on one final Super Bowl run

Travis Kelce's 14th NFL season has arrived with more questions than ever about what comes next for the Kansas City Chiefs tight end.
At 36, Kelce isn’t chasing another Super Bowl as he's entered a new chapter of his life after marrying Taylor Swift on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The couple's wedding marked a major milestone, but it also intensified speculation that Kelce could soon trade the football field for family life and his growing entertainment career.
Swift has already been enthusiastically supporting her husband from the stands. At Kansas City's season opener against the Denver Broncos, she was seen cheering from the Arrowhead Stadium suite while proudly displaying her wedding and engagement rings.
The Chiefs went on to win 31-10, giving Kelce and his teammates an encouraging start.
However, his future remains uncertain. Kelce hasn't officially announced that this will be his final season, and he appears determined to make the decision himself rather than allowing age or expectations surrounding his marriage to dictate the timing.
That approach could help him avoid a situation similar to Tom Brady's complicated retirement story.
Kelce wants to leave football on his own terms
Brady initially announced his retirement after the 2021 season, only to reverse course just 40 days later and return for another campaign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He eventually retired again following the 2022 season, bringing an extraordinary 23-year career to a close.
Kelce appears keen to avoid such uncertainty. After a difficult 2025 campaign in which Kansas City missed the playoffs, the veteran tight end has another opportunity to decide how his story ends.
His performance, physical condition, the Chiefs' success and the team's ability to compete for another championship could all influence whether he returns in 2027.
There's also a personal motivation behind his approach. Kelce reportedly wasn't satisfied with how last season ended, particularly after Kansas City struggled and Patrick Mahomes suffered a serious injury.
Instead of walking away on a low note, he wants to see what he can accomplish with Mahomes back and the team healthy.
His life away from football is already offering plenty of alternatives. Kelce has expanded into television and movies, appearing in projects including Grotesquerie and Happy Gilmore 2, while also exploring opportunities that could eventually lead to a career in broadcasting.
Then there's his future with Swift . Reports have suggested the pop superstar is ready to start a family, although she doesn't want Kelce to feel pressured into retirement.
The couple have already spent years navigating demanding schedules, with Swift touring internationally while Kelce traveled for NFL games.
That could mean retirement isn't necessarily a prerequisite for their next step together.
The perfect ending for Kelce may be to give football everything he has left, chase another championship and then walk away because he's genuinely ready. After three Super Bowl victories, a fourth, or even a fifth, could provide the fairytale finale.
Rather than repeating Brady's back-and-forth retirement saga, Kelce seems to be positioning himself for a cleaner transition.
