Travis Kelce warns Patrick Mahomes: "I still haven’t played the perfect game”

Veteran tight end insists there's another level to reach

Travis Kelce could spend the rest of his career talking about everything he has already won. Instead, as Patrick Mahomes prepares to return and the Kansas City Chiefs reset for another season, the veteran tight end is focused on something he still believes is missing and that's perfection.

“I’ve had a lot of success in the NFL, but I’m still reaching for that perfection,” Kelce told Vogue. “I still haven’t played the perfect game.”

It's a striking standard for a player who has already been part of three Super Bowl-winning teams and one of the most successful quarterback-tight end partnerships of his generation.

Kelce , now entering his 14th NFL season, made clear that Mahomes ’ return has given him another jolt of motivation after the quarterback missed time last season with a torn ACL.

“Year 14, baby, I’m fired up,” Kelce said. “Every year there’s a chance to do something special, but especially coming into this year, getting Pat [Mahomes] back and wiping the slate clean.”

That “clean slate” appears to be more important to Kelce than the weight of the Chiefs ’ recent history.

Kelce not treating Year 14 like victory lap

At 36, Kelce is at a stage when retirement questions naturally follow every season. His own comments, however, sound far more like those of a player still chasing another peak.

“I love coming to the building every day,” he said. “I know how special this team is, so I’m excited to get this thing rolling and for the chance to give the fans what they deserve.”

Kansas City’s success with Mahomes and Kelce has raised expectations to an extraordinary level, but that is exactly the environment the tight end still seems to embrace.

He doesn't sound interested in simply extending his career but rather wants another season that feels complete.

Another way to chase impossible standard

Kelce explained that mentality through his passion for golf, which he believes feeds the same competitive instincts that have shaped his football career.

“Golf kind of checks off a lot of boxes for me,” he said. “One, it keeps that competitiveness in me.”

He continued: “Not only with my friends or whomever I’m playing with, but also that inner competitiveness. Of trying to strive for something and reaching for the peak.”

The lesson, Kelce said, is that the peak itself may never fully arrive.

“Ultimately, you never get there, but you keep at it,” he said. “And that’s all sports, you know? It doesn’t matter how good you are already.”

That philosophy explains why Mahomes ’ return matters so much. Kelce has already built a Hall of Fame-caliber résumé and experienced nearly every high the NFL can offer.

Yet entering Year 14, he is still looking forward rather than backward. Three championships have not satisfied him. Apparently, neither has any game he has played so far.
