No Tyreek Hill reunion: Insider reveals Chiefs’ true trade deadline plans at wide receiver

The Kansas City Chiefs may be looking for a new weapon for Patrick Mahomes, but a reunion with Tyreek Hill appears unlikely.

The Kansas City Chiefs once again showed serious offensive problems in Week 7 and suffered a decisive 20-3 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks , the current Super Bowl champions.

Seattle’s dominant defense neutralized running back Kenneth Walker , who had been having an All-Pro-level start to the season , limiting him to just 36 yards on 14 carries . However, beyond the ground game performance, the main concern for Kansas City appears to be its passing attack.

Travis Kelce and Noah Gray were the team’s receiving leaders last weekend with 44 yards each , while Walker finished as the third-best receiver on the team with 21 yards.

The problem is that no Chiefs wide receiver managed to surpass 20 yards in Week 7. Rookie Cyrus Allen and former first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy combined for just 29 yards, a clear sign of the lack of explosiveness plaguing the offense.

With Rashee Rice sidelined for several weeks and deep threat Tyquan Thornton expected to miss a good portion of the rest of the season, Kansas City may be forced to look for solutions on the trade market.

Chiefs could go after a receiver before the deadline

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport , the Chiefs could become buyers before the trade deadline and explore options to strengthen the receiver group.

Rapoport noted that Kansas City has never been afraid to acquire talent and expects the team to hold conversations with other franchises in search of offensive help.

“I do expect them [Kansas City] to be buyers at the trade deadline. They have targeted, it seems the past couple of years, a receiver. We know we’ve talked about who are they going to acquire. I would expect them to have conversations surrounding a receiver,” Rapoport reported on Tuesday on ESPN’s Big Day .

The reporter also clarified that it is not necessarily about landing a superstar of Justin Jefferson ’s caliber.

“We’ll see what kind. It’s not like Justin Jefferson is out there. Tyreek Hill is not healthy enough, and there is obviously all the off the field stuff. I would expect them to target a receiver, we’ll see at what level. But [general manager] Brett Veach is always trying to invest and help, I think that’s where they go.”

Chiefs could rule out a return of Tyreek Hill

Analyst and former Indianapolis Colts playe r Jeff Saturday pointed to slot receiver Josh Downs as a possible name Kansas City could consider to bolster its offense.

Rapoport’s comments, noting that Tyreek Hill’s physical situation and off-field issues could complicate a potential return , increase the likelihood that the Chiefs will look for different alternatives.

Hill was found liable on two civil charges of physical assault earlier this month and is still recovering from an ACL tear suffered in September 2025.

With Patrick Mahomes as the central piece of the project, Kansas City knows it needs to find more offensive weapons if it wants to compete for the championship again. The trade deadline could be the key moment to give the quarterback the support he needs.
