'Until the Wheels Fall Off': Travis Kelce dispels retirement rumors and reveals Taylor Swift's crucial role in his future
Could Kelce continue with the Kansas City Chiefs beyond the 2026 NFL season?

T ravis Kelce entered the 2026 NFL season with retirement questions following him, but the Kansas City Chiefs star has made his intentions clear after another impressive milestone.
The 36-year-old tight end had been linked with retirement after the 2025 campaign, only to return for another season under a contract structured to give both sides flexibility beyond 2026.
Kelce was direct when asked about his future by ESPN 's Chris Berman .
“I don’t want to let this thing go,” Kelce said. “I want to keep playing until the wheels fall off.
“I still have the desire to go out there and compete, and I still think I can compete at a high level.
“I love this game so much that I’m not ready to go into that next phase yet."
While Kelce has spoken openly about wanting to continue playing, his contract gives the Chiefs a clear decision point after the season. The deal carries $12 million in fully guaranteed compensation for 2026.
The agreement uses two void years for salary-cap purposes, reducing his 2026 cap hit to roughly $4.9 million while creating a June 2027 deadline that will determine whether the arrangement continues.
That structure leaves the future open rather than guaranteeing three more seasons in Kansas City . If he remains healthy and productive, another chapter is possible, but retirement remains an option.
For now, his message is straightforward: he is not preparing to leave the game. After helping the Chiefs open the season with a statement victory, Kelce still wants to see how far he can go.
Kelce hints he can’t claim tight end receiving record
For now, Kelce backed his confidence about his talent on the field by catching three passes for 71 yards as Kansas City cruised to a 31-10 victory, and his biggest contribution also delivered another piece of history.
A 59-yard reception from Patrick Mahomes i n the third quarter pushed him beyond Jason Witten and into second place on the all-time receiving-yardage list for tight ends.
He entered the game needing 45 yards to pass Witten 's 13,046. He finished with 13,073 career receiving yards, leaving only the great Tony Gonzalez ahead of him.
Gonzalez finished his career with 15,127 receiving yards, leaving Kelce 2,054 yards behind the longtime Chiefs star but he knows closing that gap would require a remarkable amount of longevity.
The veteran joked about the challenge on the New Heights podcast, acknowledging that catching Gonzalez would mean extending his career considerably beyond the season ahead.
“I’ll have to just play another five years to catch Tony,” Kelce joked, highlighting the enormous distance between his current total and the all-time record.
The milestone nevertheless bolstered his place among the most productive tight ends in NFL history.
